Fourteen former international cricket captains from five Test teams have made a heartfelt appeal to the Pakistani government, urging improved prison conditions for Imran Khan. The 73-year-old former cricket captain and ex-prime minister is currently incarcerated amid growing concerns for his health.
The petition, orchestrated by former Australian captain Greg Chappell, was submitted to Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday. It bears the signatures of notable cricket figures, including former Indian captains Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, as well as Allan Border, Steve Waugh, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, and Kim Hughes from Australia. England’s Mike Atherton, Nasser Hussain, Mike Brearley, and David Gower have also signed, along with Clive Lloyd from the West Indies and John Wright from New Zealand.
Concerns Over Imran Khan’s Health
In their joint statement, the former captains expressed profound concern over reports of Imran Khan’s deteriorating health, particularly the alarming loss of vision while in custody. They emphasized the importance of treating Khan with dignity, given his status as a former national leader and global sporting icon.
“Recent reports concerning his health – particularly the alarming deterioration of his vision while in custody – and the conditions of his imprisonment over the past two and a half years have caused us profound concern,” the former captains wrote.
Chappell initiated the petition after learning about Khan’s declining condition in Rawalpindi’s Adiala prison, where he has been held since being jailed on corruption charges over two years ago.
Demands for Humane Treatment
The petitioners have called on the Pakistani government to provide Khan with immediate and adequate medical attention from specialists of his choosing. They also demand humane and dignified detention conditions in line with international standards, including regular family visits and fair access to legal processes.
“Cricket has long been a bridge between nations. Our shared history on the field reminds us that rivalry ends when the stumps are drawn – and respect endures. Imran Khan embodied that spirit throughout his career. We call on authorities to honour it now by upholding the principles of decency and justice.”
Sunil Gavaskar, a prominent voice in Indian cricket, expressed his dismay over Khan’s treatment, recalling their friendship since Khan’s early days in Worcestershire.
Family Pleads for Khan’s Release
Imran Khan’s supporters have been vocal about his release on medical grounds, highlighting the severe loss of vision in his right eye. They have also criticized the denial of visits from family and personal physicians.
“He’s in a very small cell, which has been described as a ‘death cell’ because this is where they’ve held people who are on death row,” his son Sulaiman said in December.
Sulaiman further detailed the harsh conditions, mentioning frequent electricity cuts and restrictions on reading materials. He reflected on his father’s political journey, acknowledging the risks but supporting Khan’s mission.
Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have been imprisoned since August 2023, following his removal from Pakistan’s leadership the previous year. Khan faces numerous corruption charges, culminating in a 31-year jail sentence after a recent verdict in December.
“The water that he showers in is not just dirty, but discoloured,” his other son Kasim reported.
Implications and International Reactions
The appeal from cricket legends underscores the global concern over Khan’s treatment. It also highlights the broader implications for Pakistan’s international image and human rights record. The cricket community, known for its spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie, is leveraging its influence to advocate for justice and humane treatment.
As the situation unfolds, the international community watches closely, with many hoping for a resolution that aligns with the values of fairness and respect that cricket champions worldwide have long upheld.
The Pakistani government has yet to respond to the petition, but the cricketing world remains hopeful that this call for action will lead to positive changes in Khan’s prison conditions.
