Collingwood’s star player Nick Daicos has made it clear that there is no pressure on forward Bobby Hill to return to the club before he is ready. Hill, who was awarded the 2023 Norm Smith Medal, is currently on extended leave for the second time in a year, prioritizing his health and personal wellbeing.

The 25-year-old forward played only 14 games last season due to personal challenges that affected his ability to train consistently. Despite making a return to the club ahead of the finals, Hill was not selected as the Magpies were eliminated in the preliminary final by eventual champions Brisbane.

Club’s Support and Hill’s Absence

Collingwood issued a statement on January 9, confirming that Hill would not be rejoining the team until after the Christmas break. His absence was noted when the squad attended the Australian Open on Friday without him.

“With Bob, it’s just ensuring that his health and wellbeing is the main priority constantly,” Daicos emphasized. “We’ve been checking in with him, and I think he’s going well. Whenever the time’s ready for him and he’s ready to join back in training is a win.”

“We all love seeing him out there doing what he does, and he gives us all so much energy. Hopefully that’s soon, but I don’t think there’s any pressure on him.” – Nick Daicos

Even if Hill returns to training soon, he is expected to miss the early part of the season. However, Daicos remains optimistic about the team’s ability to manage without him, as well as the departure of fellow forward Brody Mihocek to Melbourne.

Team Dynamics and Age Profile

Collingwood’s age profile has been a topic of discussion, as they enter the season with the oldest list in the competition. Despite this, Daicos dismissed concerns, pointing to the team’s past performance.

“We’ll start the season really strong so I’m looking forward to that,” Daicos stated. “We had the same predictions in 2025 where they were saying we’re getting older, but we still made a prelim.”

The club has extended contracts to veteran players like Scott Pendlebury, Steele Sidebottom, and Jeremy Howe, reinforcing their strategy of balancing experience with emerging talent.

Daicos’ Fitness and Team Preparations

Amidst the discussions about Hill and the team’s age, Daicos himself has been in the spotlight regarding his fitness. The 23-year-old showcased his form during a match simulation session on Friday, dispelling any concerns after briefly leaving the field with a leg issue last week.

“Feeling really fresh, body feels awesome heading into the practice matches,” Daicos remarked. “The club’s done a great job with managing a few of the boys, and now we’re seeing the benefits of it.”

As the Magpies gear up for the new season, the focus remains on ensuring player wellbeing and maintaining competitive performance. The club’s approach to player management, including Hill’s situation, highlights a broader commitment to supporting their athletes both on and off the field.

Looking ahead, Collingwood fans and players alike are hopeful for a strong start to the season, with the team’s depth and resilience being key factors in overcoming early challenges.
