A new state-of-the-art lyric theatre is set to transform Canberra’s cultural landscape, promising to attract major productions to the Australian capital. The ACT government has unveiled detailed designs of the 2000-seat venue, which will be located in the heart of the city, at the corner of Vernon Circle and Northbourne Avenue.
The announcement follows the submission of a works application to the National Capital Authority, the federal body responsible for approving the project. The theatre is designed to complement the existing Canberra Theatre Centre precinct and will offer stunning views of Black Mountain, along with a spacious northern forecourt for public gatherings.

“Importantly, the detailed design also responds to the needs of the people who will watch performances, the performers who will take the stage, and the staff who will work in the venue, which has been guided by extensive community consultation throughout the planning and design process,” said Chief Minister Andrew Barr.
