Canberra residents are being called upon to voice their preferences for the new aquatic centre set to be constructed at Commonwealth Park. This initiative, led by the ACT government, aims to replace the existing Canberra Olympic Pool in Civic with a modern facility that caters to a wide range of community needs.
The ACT government is pushing forward with plans to build the Canberra Aquatic Centre near Lake Burley Griffin, featuring a combination of indoor and outdoor pools, splash areas for children, and various recreational amenities. Chief Minister Andrew Barr emphasized the importance of community input in shaping the facility.
“The new centre will be designed to welcome as wide a range of users as possible within the project budget,” Barr stated. “We are asking Canberrans to share their ideas on what facilities and features are most important – your feedback will help shape this new facility.”
Revitalizing Commonwealth Park
The announcement comes as part of a broader vision by the National Capital Authority, unveiled in early 2025, to rejuvenate Commonwealth Park. This vision includes not only the aquatic centre but also a permanent year-round Floriade garden and an upgraded Stage 88.
In its 2024 budget, the ACT government committed to relocating the Civic pool and replacing it with a new, expanded convention centre. However, the project required a financial partnership with the federal government, which has now been secured. As part of a pre-election promise, the Albanese government will contribute $100 million to the aquatic and convention centre projects, matched by the territory government.
Combined, the two governments will invest $137.8 million in planning and delivering the new aquatic centre.
Community Engagement and Feedback
ACT Senator Katy Gallagher has urged the community to participate in a seven-week consultation period to ensure the aquatic centre aligns with local expectations. “This is a big investment in the future of our city,” Gallagher remarked, “and will deliver a brand new aquatic centre in a central location but also importantly will free up land to unlock the construction of the new National Convention Centre precinct.”
Canberrans, along with sporting organizations, community groups, and peak bodies, are encouraged to share their views on the desired features of the Commonwealth Park pool. The feedback will inform the design and functionality of the new centre, focusing on equipment, amenities, and year-round usability.
Looking Ahead
While a definitive timeline for the project is yet to be established, construction of the aquatic centre is anticipated to commence within the current parliamentary term. New artist impressions of the multi-level venue have been released as the government seeks approval from the National Capital Authority.
The move represents a significant step towards enhancing Canberra’s recreational infrastructure, promising to deliver a state-of-the-art facility that meets the diverse needs of the community. As the consultation process unfolds, Canberrans have a unique opportunity to influence the development of a key public amenity that will serve the city for years to come.
