byd-unveils-flash-charging-app-as-1-500-kw-network-expands-nationwide

BYD is reportedly making strides in the development of its Flash Charging app, coinciding with the rapid deployment of its megawatt charging network across China. Screenshots of the app interface, which have been circulating online, reveal features such as plug-and-charge capability and integration with Sesame Credit for payment, although BYD has not officially announced a public release until late February.

According to IT Home, the BYD Flash Charging app has been officially launched on major Android app stores. The app is described as a comprehensive charging service application, offering plug-and-charge, automatic payment settlement, station search, transparent pricing display, and navigation. This launch aligns with the nationwide installation of BYD’s megawatt flash charging stations and precedes the company’s upcoming technology event on March 5, where they are expected to unveil Megawatt Flash Charging 2.0, alongside other innovations like Blade Battery 2.0, DM 6.0 hybrid system, and God’s Eye 5.0 driver-assistance system.

Expansion of Megawatt Flash Charging Network

CarNewsChina reports that BYD is intensifying the installation of its liquid-cooled megawatt flash chargers, branded as “megawatt flash charging.” Recent disclosures indicate that units with a peak output of 1,360 kW are already being deployed, while new images reveal a maximum rated output of 1,500 kW and a current capability of 1,500 A. Leaked technical documents have even suggested configurations reaching 2,100 kW under specific dual-gun scenarios.

BYD’s megawatt system is designed around a 1,000 V architecture, aiming to achieve charging times comparable to traditional gasoline refueling. Under optimal conditions, reports suggest the system can add approximately 400 km of range in about five minutes using the 1,000 V and 1,000 A configuration. However, BYD has not issued a standardized charging time certificate in the past 90 days.

Strategic Deployment and App Integration

BYD plans to establish over 4,000 self-operated fast charging stations nationwide, with partners like XiaoJu Charging helping to expand the network to more than 15,000 stations. The stations will reportedly include flagship hubs and satellite installations, though specific provincial distribution details have not been disclosed.

The Flash Charging app interface, as shown in the leaked images, suggests automatic vehicle authentication upon plugging in, minimizing the need for QR code scanning. The app supports payment methods such as Sesame Credit, operated by Ant Group, which allows for deposit-free activation and automatic payment settlement via Alipay. Chinese app store listings indicate that the primary BYD App already includes charging-station search and vehicle-control functions, implying that flash charging may be integrated as a module rather than a standalone product.

Implications for China’s Charging Infrastructure

China’s public DC charging infrastructure is currently concentrated in the 250 kW to 600 kW range, according to industry summaries from February. This places BYD’s disclosed 1,360 kW to 1,500 kW hardware well above mainstream deployment levels. While several domestic OEMs have transitioned to 800 V platforms with peak charging above 500 kW, megawatt-class public chargers remain rare in large-scale rollouts.

The launch of BYD’s Flash Charging app and the expansion of its high-power charging network could significantly impact the electric vehicle market in China, potentially setting new benchmarks for charging speed and convenience. As the company prepares for its technology event in March, industry observers will be keenly watching for further announcements and updates on BYD’s ambitious plans.
