A new initiative that elegantly combines the art of ballet with the science of aged care is poised to take the spotlight in Claremont this April. The inaugural Ballet 4 You Teacher’s Workshop will be hosted on April 18 at Mary Lockett Hall, Christ Church. This full-day event is crafted for dance teachers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and others interested in harnessing movement to aid older adults.
This workshop is the brainchild of Lisa Purchas, a Claremont-based dance instructor who founded Ballet 4 You in 2017. Her inspiration stemmed from a deeply personal place—the loss of her mother, Joanna, to Alzheimer’s disease. In her mother’s memory, Purchas developed a program aimed at assisting individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and early-stage Alzheimer’s. The program focuses on enhancing balance, posture, and strength through modified ballet exercises.
“The program encourages participants to use both sides of the body and brain,” Purchas explained. “It’s not just about movement — it’s about improving cognitive function, gait, and emotional wellbeing.”
Expanding the Reach of Ballet 4 You
Over time, Ballet 4 You has broadened its scope beyond dementia care. It now includes seated classes for elderly participants in various settings, such as aged care homes, community centers, and private sessions. The program has been lauded for its accessibility and its ability to instill joy and confidence in older adults through gentle, structured movement.
The upcoming workshop will feature guest speakers from the aged and geriatric care sectors. Additionally, hands-on sessions will be led by Purchas herself. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn both seated and barre-based exercises, delve into the science of movement and memory, and receive a comprehensive resource pack. This pack includes class notes, videos, and a Ballet 4 You T-shirt.
From Personal Mission to Professional Practice
Purchas, who holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Business and International Relations, has shared her work extensively through Rotary talks, media appearances, and international interviews. She also operates the Dancescene Studio in Claremont, where she teaches ballet to students of all ages.
Participants eager to deepen their training can opt for an additional intensive session. This session allows them to become registered Ballet 4 You Practitioners, enabling them to deliver the program professionally in aged care and community settings.
The Impact of Movement on Aging
According to experts, incorporating movement into the lives of older adults can significantly enhance their quality of life. Dr. Jane Thompson, a geriatric care specialist, noted, “Programs like Ballet 4 You are crucial as they not only improve physical health but also contribute to mental and emotional wellbeing.”
The workshop, running from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM, costs $550 (including GST), with light refreshments provided. The initiative represents a growing trend in integrating arts into healthcare, particularly for aging populations, where the focus is on holistic wellness.
As the population ages, such programs are likely to become increasingly important. The Ballet 4 You initiative highlights a shift towards innovative, non-pharmacological approaches to elder care. By emphasizing movement and cognitive engagement, it offers a promising avenue for enhancing the lives of older adults.
Looking ahead, Purchas envisions expanding the program further, potentially reaching international audiences. “Our goal is to make Ballet 4 You a staple in aged care facilities worldwide,” she stated. “We believe in the power of dance to heal and inspire.”
The announcement of the workshop comes at a time when aged care facilities are seeking new methods to engage residents meaningfully. As such, Ballet 4 You is not just a program but a movement towards a more compassionate and creative approach to elder care.
