West Australian tech billionaire Laurence Escalante has been charged with a series of serious offences, including family violence and drug-related crimes, following an alleged assault on his 24-year-old ex-partner. Escalante, aged 44, appeared in Perth Magistrates Court on Friday morning to face eight charges, which include persistently engaging in family violence and criminal damage or destruction of property.
The charges against Escalante, who is the owner of the Virtual Gaming Worlds (VGW) empire, a company that operates a network of casino-style online games in the United States, also include stealing, aggravated home burglary, unlawful assault, and possession of cocaine and MDMA with intent to sell or supply.
Details of the Allegations
According to police prosecutors, Escalante was arrested at his Perth home on Thursday following an incident that reportedly took place on Monday evening. The alleged victim, who had been in a relationship with Escalante for 12 months before it ended in December, claims that Escalante arrived at her home and forced his way into her bedroom, where he allegedly struck her in the face with a closed fist.
Prosecutors allege that after the alleged assault, Escalante locked himself in a bedroom and stole jewellery worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, including a Cartier watch and bracelets. The complainant further alleged that Escalante had assaulted her on multiple occasions during their relationship, including during trips to Mykonos, Singapore, and Bali, though he is not currently facing charges for these incidents.
Pattern of Behavior and Legal Proceedings
The court was informed of a pattern of “coercive, violent and controlling behaviour” exhibited by Escalante throughout the relationship. In one incident in July 2025, Escalante allegedly assaulted the victim by punching her in the face while they were in a car. Despite her pleas for help, the driver allegedly ignored her and turned up the music.
Escalante, who was represented by a team of lawyers at the hearing, requested that the details of his charges be suppressed from publication, citing concerns for his safety due to potential kidnapping and extortion threats from organized crime gangs. However, this request was denied by the court.
Escalante ranked 35th on the Australian Financial Review Rich List last year with a net worth of $4.5 billion, up 20 percent from the previous year.
Impact on Business and Public Image
The charges come at a time when Escalante’s company, VGW, recently announced a “multi-year partnership” with US wrestling giant WWE. This collaboration aims to provide premium entertainment experiences across multiple platforms for millions of players and fans in the United States.
Despite the legal challenges, Escalante was granted bail under strict conditions, including reporting to authorities three times a week and providing a $100,000 surety. He has indicated plans to contest the charges.
Looking Ahead
As the legal proceedings unfold, the case is likely to draw significant public and media attention, given Escalante’s high-profile status and the serious nature of the allegations. The outcome could have far-reaching implications for his business ventures and personal reputation.
Observers will be watching closely to see how the case develops and what impact, if any, it might have on the operations of VGW and its partnerships. Meanwhile, the allegations serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing issue of domestic violence and the importance of addressing such cases with seriousness and urgency.
