Wagons have often been dismissed as uncool, but Audi has long defied this stereotype with its RS4 Avant. While many car manufacturers have shifted focus to SUVs, Audi’s commitment to the wagon bodystyle in Australia has been steadfast, largely due to the enduring popularity of the RS4 and RS6 models. These Avants, as Audi affectionately terms its wagons, have achieved cult status among automotive enthusiasts.
However, the launch of the new A5 lineup marks the end of an era. The A5 effectively replaces the A4 and previous A5 ranges, signaling the discontinuation of the A4, S4, and RS4 models. This development leaves fans of the RS4 Avant facing the bittersweet prospect of bidding farewell to a beloved icon. Yet, if this is indeed the final chapter, the RS4 Avant exits with a flourish rather than a whimper.
The Final Iteration: A Lasting Impression
The final RS4 Avant iteration, equipped with the Competition Plus Pack, is a testament to Audi’s dedication to performance and style. Priced at an additional $13,990, this package is far from a mere cosmetic upgrade. It includes RS sports suspension with coilovers, an RS sport exhaust, fixed-ratio dynamic steering, reprogrammed software for the sports differential and transmission, and an increased top speed of 290 km/h. The package also features styling enhancements such as 20-inch gloss black alloy wheels, black Audi rings, and new RS front sports seats.
Our test vehicle, finished in ‘Progressive Red,’ accentuated the blacked-out elements, delivering genuine curb appeal. Beneath the hood, the 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 engine remains unchanged, a collaboration between Audi and Porsche that delivers a robust 331 kW of power and 600 Nm of torque. While these figures may not rival those of electric vehicles, the engine’s sound, especially through the new exhaust, is music to the ears of petrolheads.
Performance Meets Practicality
The RS4 Avant Competition Pack is a purposeful vehicle, featuring manually adjustable coilovers that allow drivers to customize rebound, compression, and ride height to their preferences. This level of customization enhances the driving experience, making the RS4 a memorable performance car encased in a station wagon body.
The RS4 Avant is more than just a powerful machine; it offers a genuinely engaging driving experience. Its compact size makes it more of a performance car than a family hauler, yet it still provides enough space for a small family. The wagon design ensures ease of loading, whether it’s luggage or shopping bags.
Interior Excellence
Inside, the RS4 Avant continues to impress with its stylish design. Despite its impending retirement, the ‘B9’ generation A4 remains a standout in the mainstream luxury space. Audi’s mastery in blending materials, finishes, and a mix of digital and physical controls ensures both aesthetic appeal and user-friendliness. The Competition Pack RS seats are particularly noteworthy, combining race car aesthetics with exceptional comfort.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Audi’s Wagon Legacy
The introduction of a future RS5 Avant, anticipated to launch in 2026, raises questions about its suitability as a replacement for the RS4 Avant. While it may offer increased practicality, it must retain the RS4’s compact handling characteristics and not encroach on the territory of the larger, more powerful RS6 Avant.
Even if the RS5 surpasses the RS4 in every measurable aspect, it will never fully replace the RS4 Avant in the hearts of enthusiasts who cherish the legacy of this fast wagon hero. The RS4 Avant’s departure marks the end of an era, but its impact on the automotive world will be remembered fondly by those who appreciate its unique blend of performance, style, and practicality.
