The Bruce Mason Centre in Takapuna, Auckland, has unveiled a comprehensive audio system upgrade, featuring the state-of-the-art JBL Professional VTX A6 line array system. This transformation aims to enhance the theatre’s adaptability for its diverse lineup of live performances. Managed by Auckland Live for Tataki Auckland Unlimited, the 1,100-seat venue is a cornerstone for regional music, comedy, dance, and community events, offering flexible seating arrangements that range from a tiered auditorium to an open-floor setup.

After two decades of service, the previous audio system at the Bruce Mason Centre fell short of meeting the evolving demands of modern touring productions and performance standards. In collaboration with distributor JPRO, the venue opted for the JBL VTX A6 line array, praised for its output, compact size, and rigging versatility. This choice allows the system to seamlessly adapt to various seating and stage configurations. The upgrade also includes JBL VTX B18 subwoofers, JBL AC18 compact loudspeakers, Crown I-Tech amplifiers, and BSS processors, collectively enhancing sound clarity and consistency throughout the theatre.

Advanced Audio Technology for Modern Performances

The new installation features two flown arrays, each comprising 12 JBL VTX A6 dual 6-inch line array elements. Complementing these are twelve JBL VTX B18 arrayable 18-inch subwoofers, configured in a cardioid setup to bolster low-frequency coverage. These subwoofers can be either flown or ground-stacked, depending on the specific event requirements. Additionally, eight JBL AC18 loudspeakers are strategically placed under the balcony to ensure uniform sound distribution, even in shadowed seating areas. The entire system is powered by Crown I-Tech 43500HD amplifiers, with BSS BLU-806 processors managing signal distribution across the networked setup.

Precision and Flexibility in Sound Design

System design and prediction were meticulously executed using JBL’s Venue Synthesis 3D Acoustic Simulation software. This tool allowed for precise modeling of coverage, aiming, and delay structures across multiple configurations.

“The platform enables precise angle prediction, system tuning, and delay time optimization for each loudspeaker position,” said Tim Robertson, Tour Sound Manager with JPRO. “It is remarkably accurate compared to real-world performance, significantly streamlining live tuning and system commissioning.”

To facilitate swift adjustments for the theatre’s varied programming, the technical team employed JBL’s ArrayLink app to create six presets that simplify system reconfiguration. Coupled with the fast-rigging capabilities of the VTX A Series, the arrays can be scaled and repositioned in under 30 minutes, allowing the crew to efficiently adapt to events ranging from concerts to family entertainment.

Impact on the Venue and Future Prospects

The completion of this audio upgrade ensures that the Bruce Mason Centre remains a competitive venue for both touring productions and local performances. The enhanced audio coverage and clarity, along with a streamlined workflow for the technical staff, underscore the centre’s commitment to providing top-tier experiences for performers and audiences alike.

According to Lindsay Clements of the Bruce Mason Centre technical team,

“The VTX rigging system delivers the flexibility and performance the venue needs for its varied event schedule. The sound is clean and holds up beautifully across different instruments and sources.”

As the Bruce Mason Centre looks to the future, this investment in cutting-edge audio technology positions it as a leader in the regional arts scene. The venue is now better equipped to host a broader range of events, ensuring that it continues to be a vibrant hub for cultural and community engagement in Auckland.
