american-thyroid-association-releases-new-thyroid-cancer-care-guidelines

The American Thyroid Association (ATA) has unveiled new guidelines designed to enhance the management of adult patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC), the most common form of thyroid cancer. Published in the peer-reviewed journal Thyroid®, these guidelines aim to establish a new standard of care for thyroid cancer patients.

Developed by an ATA task force, the guidelines were led by Co-Chairs Dr. Matthew Ringel from The Ohio State University College of Medicine and Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Dr. Julie Ann Sosa from the University of California San Francisco. The task force incorporated input from a diverse group of stakeholders, including specialists across various fields of thyroid cancer care, a patient advocate, and an expert in systematic reviews and meta-analyses. ATA President Dr. Jacqueline Jonklaas praised the task force, stating,

“ATA leadership is grateful to the task force members, ably led by Drs. Ringel and Sosa, for this superlative clinical practice guideline that I believe will help set the standard of care for future generations of patients with thyroid cancer.”

Comprehensive Guidelines for Thyroid Cancer Management

The newly revised guidelines cover the entire spectrum of thyroid cancer management, starting from the initial diagnosis. They provide detailed recommendations on staging and risk assessment, initial treatment decisions, and the evaluation of treatment responses. Additionally, the guidelines offer insights into monitoring strategies, diagnostic testing, and subsequent therapies, all based on the strength of evidence and consideration of side effects and outcomes.

Patient-reported outcomes and thyroid cancer survivorship are also emphasized, along with areas identified as needing further high-quality research. Dr. Christopher McCabe, ATA Secretary and Chief Operating Officer, highlighted the significance of these guidelines, stating,

“This thyroid cancer guideline continues the ATA’s leadership in providing high quality and evidence-based guidelines which provide thoughtful guidance to clinicians taking care of patients with thyroid cancer.”
