A beloved fixture on Dean Street, the Albion Hotel, will close its doors for the final time this Sunday, October 19. The decision comes amid challenging trading conditions that have impacted many local businesses. The closure marks the end of an era for the four-storey pub, known for its rich history and popular rooftop bar, which opened in 2012.

The Albion Hotel’s staff were informed that the lease would not be renewed, leaving the venue’s future uncertain. While there is potential for another operator to take over the site, the current chapter will conclude with last drinks being served this weekend.

The Impact on Albury’s Hospitality Scene

Brendon Cooper, who managed the Albion Hotel from 2004 to 2019, expressed his disappointment over the closure. “Any pub closing in town is never good, it’s always disappointing,” he said. “You need as much variety as you can in hospitality. To see someone close down is a shame for the owners, staff, and customers going there.”

Cooper highlighted the broader economic pressures facing businesses, noting that the rising cost of living has led many to be more cautious with their spending.

“There’s only so much money that can go around, and a lot of it gets tied up with other things before it gets used for entertainment expenses,” he explained.

Challenges and Changes in the Local Pub Industry

The closure of the Albion Hotel is not an isolated incident. Space Nightspot recently shut its doors but may reopen after a revamp. Similarly, the nearby Zed Bar closed in 2023 before reopening as The Globe Hotel in 2024. These changes reflect a dynamic but challenging environment for local venues.

The Albion Hotel is operated by the Australian Venue Co, which manages over 200 pubs across Australia, including other local establishments like Beer DeLuxe, The Bended Elbow, and the Birallee Tavern. The company’s extensive portfolio highlights the competitive nature of the hospitality industry, where adaptability is key to survival.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Dean Street

As the Albion Hotel prepares to serve its last patrons, the question remains: what will become of this iconic location? The possibility of a new operator taking over offers a glimmer of hope for the community, eager to see the space revitalized.

Meanwhile, the closure serves as a reminder of the economic realities facing many businesses today. As consumers tighten their belts, the hospitality sector must navigate these challenges with creativity and resilience.

For now, the Albion Hotel’s impending closure is a poignant moment for Albury, marking the end of a significant chapter in the town’s social and cultural life. Whether the venue will find new life under different management remains to be seen, but its legacy as a beloved local haunt will endure in the memories of its patrons.
