Western Bulldogs legend Brad Johnson has revealed his battle with cancer, sharing that he had a tumor removed “the size of a small footy” during the 2025 AFL season. The 49-year-old Hall of Famer and Bulldogs games record holder is now on the path to recovery, expressing a desire to inspire others facing similar health challenges.

Johnson’s ordeal began after a game of bubble soccer for his Fox Footy commitments, when he noticed an unusual lump protruding from his back. Initially dismissing it as a minor issue, he sought medical advice after the lump persisted.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Johnson consulted the Bulldogs’ long-time club doctor, Jake Landsberger, who immediately recommended further examination. An ultrasound revealed a significant lump, measuring approximately 11 or 12 centimeters. Johnson was diagnosed with liposarcoma, a rare cancer originating in fat cells, which presents varying survival rates.

His employers granted him the necessary time off to focus on his health. Johnson’s “footy senses” kicked in when he met with surgeon Dr. Gerard Powell, who provided reassurance and a clear treatment plan. “He was brilliant, a calm man, seriously calm, seriously positive guy,” Johnson recounted, likening the experience to following a coach’s strategy.

Undergoing a month of radiation therapy, Johnson eventually had the tumor surgically removed. “It grew quick, and thank God it exposed itself in that way so I was able to get on top of it – a bit of luck, in some ways,” he reflected.

Emotional Journey and Support

Despite the physical challenges, Johnson faced emotional lows during his treatment. He admitted to feeling “shitty” at times, though those around him offered crucial support. “The flick for me from the negative thought to the positive thought was they’ve said, OK let’s just follow the process. At the end of it, you know, should be all good,” he shared.

Johnson’s caregivers played a pivotal role in maintaining his morale, even using music to lift his spirits. “I don’t know whether the nurses picked it or not but I lay on the bed, they go ‘what music do you want?’ I just go, ‘whatever.’ Next thing I know the Bulldogs theme song comes on,” he recalled with a smile.

Looking Forward

As Johnson continues his recovery, he remains committed to advocating for a positive approach to health challenges. His openness about his experience aims to provide hope and encouragement to others facing similar battles.

Johnson’s story is a testament to resilience and the importance of early detection and treatment. His journey underscores the need for awareness around rare cancers like liposarcoma, highlighting the critical role of medical professionals and personal support networks in navigating such diagnoses.

With his characteristic determination, Johnson looks forward to returning to his professional commitments and sharing his message of hope and perseverance. His experience serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of health challenges and the strength required to overcome them.
