The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) has announced the addition of Environmental Health Perspectives (EHP) to its prestigious portfolio of scientific journals. This significant development marks a new chapter for EHP, a globally respected journal renowned for its contributions to research at the intersection of environment and human health.

Established by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) under the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 1972, EHP has been a cornerstone publication for the environmental health sciences community. In a strategic move in 2025, the NIH decided to donate the journal to a non-governmental publisher through the Federal Surplus Personal Property Donation Program. As a federally chartered nonprofit organization, ACS was eligible to receive the journal and swiftly devised a plan to ensure its continued success. The formal transfer of EHP to ACS was completed by the end of 2025.

Preserving a Legacy

Joel Kaufman, Editor-in-Chief of EHP, expressed his enthusiasm about the journal’s new affiliation with ACS, emphasizing the importance of maintaining its legacy. “I am thrilled to see EHP find a new home as an ACS journal, ensuring that this vital work will continue to reach the global scientific community,” Kaufman stated. “EHP has a rich legacy and is held in special regard by the community of environmental health scholars. I look forward to working with ACS Publications to build a rich future as well, benefiting from ACS’ publishing expertise and shared commitment to advancing science for the benefit of humanity.”

For over five decades, EHP has been a trusted source of high-quality research articles linking environmental factors to human health. The journal’s reputation for editorial excellence and scientific integrity has made it a vital resource for researchers worldwide.

ACS’s Commitment to Scientific Excellence

Sarah Tegen, ACS Publications Senior Vice President and Chief Publishing Officer, highlighted the organization’s dedication to upholding EHP’s standards. “We are honored to steward this important journal, preserving its editorial independence and ensuring its continuity for the global scientific community,” she said. ACS’s extensive experience in publishing scientific journals positions it well to support EHP’s future endeavors.

ACS Publications plans to minimize disruptions for authors and readers, with manuscript submissions set to reopen in early 2026. The journal will continue to operate as a fully open access publication, with article publishing charges waived for submissions through the end of 2026. This move underscores ACS’s commitment to making scientific research accessible to a broader audience.

Looking Forward

The transition of EHP to ACS represents a significant milestone in the journal’s history. By joining forces with a leading nonprofit scholarly society, EHP is poised to expand its reach and impact in the field of environmental health sciences. The integration of EHP into ACS’s portfolio not only ensures the preservation of its legacy but also enhances the society’s mission to advance scientific knowledge for the benefit of humanity.

As the scientific community anticipates the reopening of submissions and the resumption of publications, the collaboration between EHP and ACS promises to foster new opportunities for groundbreaking research and global dissemination of knowledge.

In the coming months, EHP’s previously published content will be integrated with ACS journal content, providing researchers with seamless access to a vast repository of scientific information. This strategic alliance is expected to strengthen the journal’s position as a leading source of environmental health research.

With a shared vision for advancing science and a commitment to excellence, ACS and EHP are set to embark on an exciting journey that will undoubtedly contribute to the progress of environmental health sciences worldwide.
