
Computer scientists at Princeton University are pioneering efforts to integrate virtual reality with the physical world, potentially revolutionizing remote collaboration, education, entertainment, and gaming. This groundbreaking research, led by Assistant Professor Parastoo Abtahi and postdoctoral research associate Mohamed Kari, aims to make interactions between users and technology seamless and intuitive.
Abtahi envisions a future where virtual and augmented reality technologies are ubiquitous. “It will be important that users of this technology are able to seamlessly interact with the physical world,” she stated. Their innovative work, which will be presented next month at the ACM Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology in Busan, Korea, involves pairing virtual reality technology with a physical robot that users can control.
Innovative Interactions: From Pixels to Physical Objects
The system developed by Abtahi and Kari allows users, while wearing a mixed reality headset, to perform actions such as selecting a drink from a virtual menu and placing it on a desk, or asking an animated bee to deliver snacks. Initially, these items exist only as pixels, but they soon materialize physically, thanks to an invisible robot.
“Visually, it feels instantaneous,” said Abtahi, highlighting the seamless nature of the experience.
Kari emphasized the importance of simplicity, stating, “By removing all unnecessary technical details, even the robot itself, the experience appears seamless.” The ultimate goal is to make the technology disappear, allowing for an intuitive interaction between humans and computers.
Overcoming Technical Challenges
One of the key challenges in this system is facilitating effective communication between the user and the robot. The researchers developed an interaction technique where simple hand gestures enable users to select and move objects. These gestures are translated into commands for the robot, which is equipped with its own mixed reality headset to accurately place objects within the virtual environment.
Another challenge involves the dynamic manipulation of the user’s field of view. Using a technology known as 3D Gaussian splatting, Abtahi and Kari create a realistic digital copy of the physical space. This allows the system to erase or add objects to the user’s view, such as making a moving robot invisible or introducing an animated bee.
“To achieve this, every inch of the room and every object within it must be scanned and rendered digitally,” explained Abtahi. “Right now, the process is somewhat tedious.”
Streamlining this scanning process, potentially by delegating it to a robot, is a focus for future research in Abtahi’s lab.
