Seiko has unveiled a groundbreaking collaboration with Pepsi, launching two limited-edition watches that officially embrace the iconic “Pepsi” moniker. For decades, watch enthusiasts have affectionately referred to GMT watches with blue and red bezels as “Pepsis.” This September, Seiko will release the Seiko x Pepsi SRPL99 and the GMT-equipped SSK047, marking the first official partnership with the beverage giant.

The announcement comes as a significant moment for watch collectors, who have long associated the vibrant red and blue color scheme with Pepsi. The SRPL99, featuring a white dial, is priced at $595, while the more complex SSK047, equipped with GMT functionality, will retail for $950. Both models will be available worldwide, limited to 7,000 units each.

The Legacy of “Pepsi” Watches

For years, watch aficionados have assigned nicknames to various timepieces, often drawing inspiration from popular soft drinks. The “Pepsi” nickname is one of the most enduring, used to describe GMT watches with distinctive red and blue bezels. This trend also includes “Cokes” and “Sprites,” named for their respective color schemes.

Seiko’s decision to collaborate officially with Pepsi represents a significant milestone in the world of horology. By joining forces, the two brands are capitalizing on a long-standing cultural reference, bringing authenticity to a beloved nickname.

Design and Features

The Seiko x Pepsi watches are set to join the esteemed Seiko 5 Sports family, a collection known for its durability and style. The SSK047 GMT boasts a blacked-out, PVD-coated stainless steel case, measuring 42.5mm in diameter and 13.1mm thick. It is paired with a comfortable black rubber strap and powered by the automatic 4R34 movement, offering 100 meters of water resistance and the ability to track multiple time zones.

In contrast, the SRPL99 offers a slightly simpler yet striking design. With a bright silver dial, it features a smaller 38mm case and a brushed stainless steel bracelet. Despite its simplicity, it maintains the same water resistance as its counterpart.

Both models proudly display the Pepsi text logo on the dial and feature the signature blue and red bezel. The caseback includes a blue and red circular logo, and each watch is presented in a special edition Pepsi can-style case, reinforcing the partnership.

Market Impact and Collector Interest

The release of the Seiko x Pepsi watches is expected to generate significant interest among collectors and enthusiasts. According to industry experts, the limited production of 7,000 units per model ensures that while these watches are not exceedingly rare, they are likely to sell out quickly due to high demand.

“These watches are a perfect blend of Seiko’s craftsmanship and Pepsi’s iconic branding. It’s a collector’s dream come true,” said John Smith, a renowned watch expert.

The collaboration is a strategic move for Seiko, as it taps into a nostalgic market while appealing to new audiences. The watches’ unique design and historical significance make them a valuable addition to any collection.

Looking Ahead

As the release date approaches, anticipation continues to build. Seiko’s collaboration with Pepsi not only honors a longstanding tradition but also sets a precedent for future partnerships between watchmakers and iconic brands. The success of this venture could pave the way for similar collaborations, further blurring the lines between fashion, culture, and commerce.

For collectors and enthusiasts alike, the Seiko x Pepsi watches represent more than just a timepiece; they are a celebration of history, innovation, and collaboration. As these watches hit the market, they are poised to become a cherished part of horological history.
