Canberra’s hospitality industry is basking in the national spotlight as several local venues have been recognized in a range of prestigious national awards. The recognition underscores the city’s burgeoning reputation for exceptional food and beverage offerings, a sentiment well-known to locals but now celebrated on a broader stage.
The Australian Bartender Awards recently unveiled their shortlists, with Canberra establishments earning nominations in 11 out of 28 categories. Among the notable mentions, Peacemaker Saloon is vying for New Bar of the Year, Hippo is in the running for Best Live Music Bar of the Year, and Bar Rochford has secured nominations for both Best Bar Food and Wine Bar of the Year.
Celebrating Canberra’s Unique Venues
Adding to the accolades, Squeaky Clean, renowned for its dive bar charm, has been shortlisted for Bartender’s Bar of the Year. This award is particularly significant as it honors venues favored by industry insiders. Jono Murphy, owner of Squeaky Clean, expressed his delight at the recognition.
“A bartender’s bar is where people in the hospitality industry want to go and drink. So, for me, it’s recognition from the people who dedicate their careers to serving people, and they’ve said that this is somewhere the service is bang on,” said Murphy.
Murphy further noted the appeal of his bar’s unpretentious atmosphere, stating, “There are so many nice venues to go to, but at the end of the day, they’ve voted that a bar made of plywood is where they want to hang out! I think that’s pretty cool.”
Historic Venues and Modern Excellence
Meanwhile, Time Out’s list of the 25 Best Pubs in Australia features The Old Canberra Inn, a venue steeped in history. This iconic pub joins the ranks of other legendary establishments like the Birdsville Hotel in Queensland and The Dry Dock in Balmain, Sydney, which dates back to 1857.
The Old Canberra Inn’s origins trace back to 1857, predating the city of Canberra itself. Initially a coach stop for travelers between Yass and Queanbeyan, it became a family home before being renovated and relicensed as a pub in 1974. Today, it attracts patrons with its rotating selection of Australian craft beers, excellent pub fare, and vibrant entertainment options such as trivia nights, jazz jams, and live music.
Gourmet Recognition and Industry Growth
Adding to the city’s culinary accolades, Gourmet Traveller has announced nominees for their annual awards, with Lunetta at Red Hill contending for Best New Restaurant. Additionally, Benn and Mork Ratanakosol have been jointly shortlisted for Restaurant Personality of the Year.
Jono Murphy expressed pride in Canberra’s growing recognition in the hospitality sector. “I think we can all agree the industry has come on leaps and bounds in Canberra over the past four or five years. We have all these small independent operators giving it a red hot go and really driving experience hospitality,” he remarked.
“And venues like Bar Rochford have been around for nine plus years doing exactly that since day one. It’s no surprise they’re an institution,” Murphy added.
Looking Ahead
As Canberra’s hospitality scene continues to thrive, these accolades serve as a testament to the city’s dynamic and innovative offerings. The recognition from national awards not only highlights the quality of local establishments but also positions Canberra as a formidable player in Australia’s hospitality landscape.
