Dakota Davidson, a celebrated forward for the Brisbane Lions, has found herself at the center of an unfortunate storm of online abuse, facing derogatory comments about her appearance. Despite the negativity, Davidson remains proud of her identity and continues to speak out against the body shaming that has caused her significant anxiety, particularly when using public female restrooms.

Davidson’s journey through the world of professional sports has been marred by an undercurrent of criticism, especially directed at female athletes who defy conventional stereotypes. The two-time premiership forward has often been a target, with one notable incident leading to a fan’s ejection from RSEA Park last season.

“I’m quite a vibrant and passionate football player, and I like to wear my heart on my sleeve and show my true identity on the field, and that’s something I’m really proud of,” Davidson told AFL.com.au. “Behind screens and social media, there are always the keyboard warriors who don’t write the nicest things. Over the years, after every game, I’ve faced a lot of criticism and terrible messages.”

Facing the Challenges of Public Perception

For Davidson, the scrutiny often centers on her short hair, leading some to question her gender identity. “It’s really frustrating because that’s how everyone sees you. They see you as ‘you’re the boy that plays for the Lions’,” she explained. Despite achieving accolades such as being named an All-Australian forward and winning the 2023 Grand Final, Davidson finds herself battling against public perception.

The anxiety extends to everyday activities, such as using public restrooms. “You’d go to the bathroom, you wouldn’t even think twice about it, whereas I go into a public bathroom, and I am just anxious,” Davidson admitted. “I was at Melbourne Airport and didn’t want to go into the women’s bathroom, but there was an all-genders bathroom, and I felt so comfortable.”

Seeking Support and Changing Perspectives

Initially, Davidson kept her struggles private, confiding only in her mother and grandmother. However, the realization that such treatment should not be normalized prompted her to seek support from her club. “I just thought it was so normal, which is terrible. I was so naïve,” she said. After sharing her experiences with Breanna Brock, Brisbane’s head of women’s football, Davidson found a network of support within her club.

“After I finally reached out, I realized this is actually quite a serious thing,” Davidson noted. “I went and saw a psychologist, spoke to the girls, and everyone was on board. The club’s been really good about it.”

Advocating for Education and Understanding

Davidson’s message to those who feel entitled to comment on public figures’ appearances is clear: “Educate yourselves. Education is a beautiful thing, and just maybe think a little bit before you speak,” she advised. She emphasizes the importance of understanding and empathy, particularly towards the LGBTQIA+ community.

“One day it could be your daughter, your wife, your girlfriend, your aunty, it could be anything that’s close to you that’s copping this,” Davidson said. “So, just think a little bit, educate yourself on the LGBTQIA+ world and understand that there’s a lot you don’t know about people.”

Embracing Identity and Moving Forward

Despite the challenges, Davidson remains unwavering in her pride and confidence. “I’ve always taken pride in how I look and how I present myself and how I want the world to perceive me,” she stated. “I’ve been through a lot, coming out as gay, so being able to be who I am and cut my hair and showcase my true identity has been something that I’m really proud of and I wouldn’t change anything.”

Davidson’s journey is a testament to resilience and the power of self-acceptance. “I’m actually at a point in my life now where I’m 100 percent so confident in how I look and how I present and how I talk,” she said. “So, I’m not going to change anything about myself and how I go about my footy.”

As Davidson continues to play at the highest level, her story serves as an inspiration for many, highlighting the importance of embracing one’s identity and challenging societal norms.
