Two teenagers have been charged with the murder of Zdravko Bilic, a prominent businessman, at his luxury home in Warana on the Sunshine Coast. The incident has shocked the local community, known for its tranquil beaches and upscale residences.

The accused, aged 15 and 17, allegedly entered Mr. Bilic’s home on Napalle Street on Sunday night, reportedly stealing the keys to his car. When confronted by Mr. Bilic, they allegedly stabbed him twice. His body was discovered the following day by a neighbor, lying on the lawn of his property.

Mr. Bilic’s wife, Gry Tomte, a skincare entrepreneur, expressed her profound grief in a statement released through the police, describing her husband as her “entire world for 28 years.” She lamented, “The world is a little less bright without him in it.”

Legal Proceedings and Investigation

The teenagers appeared briefly in Maroochydore Children’s Court, facing charges of murder and related property offenses. They remain in custody, with the next hearing scheduled for September 10. Legal complications arose during the proceedings as solicitor Luke Bull highlighted issues with a DNA application, which was signed incorrectly by a relative instead of a parent or legal guardian. Both boys’ parents are currently incarcerated, complicating the legal process.

Sunshine Coast Detective Inspector Chris Toohey provided an update on the investigation, confirming that the altercation began inside the house and resulted in Mr. Bilic receiving two fatal stab wounds. Inspector Toohey stated, “We will allege two youths entered Mr. Bilic’s house on Sunday night in relation to a break and enter.”

“As a result of that altercation, he received two fatal stab wounds,” Inspector Toohey said.

The police have located a knife believed to be the murder weapon, which is undergoing forensic testing. The investigation is ongoing, with multiple lines of inquiry being pursued, including whether Mr. Bilic’s body lay undiscovered for several hours.

Community Shock and Personal Tributes

Mr. Bilic was a well-respected figure in the community, known for his kindness and involvement in local soccer teams. His wife, Ms. Tomte, shared memories of their life together, highlighting his generosity and positive impact on those around him. She recalled how he was adored by children he coached at Ginger Sport, a local early childhood sports program.

“He was the kind of friend who would drop everything to help anyone,” she said, recounting his tendency to assist lost animals and strangers alike. His love for soccer, particularly his support for Melbourne Victory FC, was well-known, and he was fondly remembered by his teammates as the “MLP” (most loved person).

“If you’ve had the privilege of being in Zed’s presence, you’ll know that he was literal sunshine,” Ms. Tomte wrote in a heartfelt tribute.

Community and Police Response

Inspector Toohey emphasized the shock felt by the community, describing Mr. Bilic as a “valued member” whose death has left a significant void. The Sunshine Coast, particularly Warana, is regarded as a safe area, and this incident has prompted a renewed focus on maintaining community safety.

“We pride ourselves on having, trying to maintain a safer environment for all our residents and of course being a tourist destination – we also like for people coming to visit to feel safe,” Inspector Toohey said, acknowledging the impact of the crime on local sentiment.

The police are continuing to engage with the community, gathering information and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable. The tragic event has highlighted the importance of community vigilance and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to preserve the safety and security of the Sunshine Coast.

As the legal proceedings continue, the community remains united in mourning the loss of a beloved figure, while authorities work diligently to bring justice to those affected by this tragic event.
