As Tasmania gears up for a snap state election, the Heart Foundation is urging political parties and candidates to prioritize heart health by committing to three pivotal actions. These actions aim to address the leading cause of death in the state: heart disease.
According to data from the Tasmanian Department of Health, 1,300 Tasmanians die annually from cardiovascular disease, and in 2023 alone, 8,850 individuals were hospitalized for heart-related issues. Alarmingly, Tasmania has a 13% higher prevalence of heart disease than the national average.
The Heart Foundation is advocating for investment in three cost-effective initiatives that, with the support of the next Tasmanian Government, could significantly enhance the prevention, detection, and management of heart health across the state.
Three Key Initiatives for Heart Health
Prevent: A Targeted Public Awareness Campaign
The Heart Foundation proposes a comprehensive, state-wide campaign designed to educate Tasmanians about heart health. This multi-channel initiative will be delivered through social media, digital platforms, print, radio, and major events such as AgFest. The campaign’s goal is to increase awareness and encourage more individuals to undergo Medicare-subsidised Heart Health Checks, ultimately reducing hospital admissions by promoting prevention and early detection.
Treat: Establishment of a Northern Heart Centre
A fully funded and operational Northern Heart Centre at Launceston General Hospital is pivotal to transforming cardiac care in Northern Tasmania. With joint investment from the Tasmanian and Australian Governments, this project promises the complete construction and fit-out of the Centre, including a second cardiac catheterisation lab, a 24-bed cardiac unit, and advanced diagnostic facilities. Operational funding will also cover expanded services such as inpatient cardiology care, nurse-led clinics, and regional outreach programs.
Manage: Expansion of the MyHeart MyLife Digital Support Program
The Heart Foundation seeks to scale up its MyHeart MyLife program, tailoring it for Tasmanians living with heart disease. This expansion includes Tasmania-specific awareness campaigns to boost enrolment, education tools for health professionals to enhance referrals and care, and tailored content for high-priority communities, alongside a strengthened peer support network.
Expert Opinions and Strategic Alignment
Heart Foundation CEO David Lloyd emphasized the urgency of these initiatives, stating,
“The Heart Foundation is calling on the next Tasmanian Government to back a bold, life-saving vision for heart health across the state. With heart disease remaining Tasmania’s leading cause of death, now is the time for decisive action and investment to turn the tide.”
These initiatives align with the 2024 Tasmanian Cardiac Strategy, which aims to deliver significant changes for Tasmanians, reducing the burden of cardiovascular disease on the state’s people, health system, and economy.
Implications and the Road Ahead
The Heart Foundation’s call to action highlights a crucial intersection of health policy and electoral politics. As Tasmania’s election draws near, the potential for these initiatives to become reality hinges on the political will of the parties involved. The Foundation’s proposal not only underscores the immediate need for action but also presents a roadmap for long-term health improvements and economic benefits.
With the election outcome poised to shape the future of heart health in Tasmania, the Heart Foundation’s advocacy serves as a reminder of the power of informed policy-making in addressing public health challenges. The commitment of the next government to these initiatives could mark a turning point in the fight against heart disease in the state.
