Luke Keary has raised concerns over the Canterbury Bulldogs’ handling of Bronson Xerri, describing comments by coach Cameron Ciraldo as “damning.” This follows reports suggesting the Bulldogs have already decided not to extend Xerri’s contract beyond 2027, a move Keary finds puzzling.

Xerri was notably absent from the Bulldogs’ lineup during their narrow 14-10 victory against Canberra on Thursday night. Ciraldo cited “preparation” issues as a reason for Xerri’s exclusion, further fueling speculation about the player’s future with the team.

According to Ciraldo, Xerri’s pre-season was marred by a groin injury. Despite participating in the trials and the Round 1 match against the Dragons, Xerri’s performance was overshadowed by Enari Tuala, who capitalized on his chance to shine on the right edge during the summer.

Ciraldo’s Comments Stir Controversy

The Bulldogs coach did not shy away from discussing Xerri’s reaction to his demotion, which reportedly included a request for an immediate release. Ciraldo acknowledged that such reactions are not uncommon in the NRL, but emphasized the need for players to manage their responses better.

“There’s plenty of people in the NRL that have reactions that they regret and probably feel like they could have reacted better, and that happens nearly every day in an NRL club and Bronson might have had one of those moments,” Ciraldo said.

Ciraldo expressed disappointment over the timing of the drama, especially following a bye week that offered a brief respite from media scrutiny.

Expert Opinions on Xerri’s Future

Speaking on The Late Show with Matty Johns, Keary described Ciraldo’s comments as particularly harsh given Xerri’s past contributions on the field. Keary highlighted Xerri’s speed and attacking prowess, qualities that had previously benefited the Bulldogs.

“He’s given them a different type of attack. He’s obviously got the speed out there,” Keary said. “I thought he played quite well for them last year, there are obviously a few things there that have gone on over the pre-season and there have been a few attitude things Cam Ciraldo pointed to.”

Ciraldo, however, seemed uncertain about the veracity of the reports regarding Xerri’s contract status. He admitted to not being privy to all discussions involving contracts and player management.

“I don’t believe that’s true, but I’m not totally sure, to be honest,” Ciraldo said.

Industry Reactions and Historical Context

NRL personalities like Matty Johns and Nathan Hindmarsh have also weighed in, expressing skepticism about the rumors. Johns found it “very strange” that the Bulldogs would make such a long-term decision about Xerri, who has the potential to become one of the league’s top centers.

“He’s still a classy centre. A lot of clubs would be chasing him,” Hindmarsh noted. “They’ve got a good side this year, the Dogs, they’re a lot more settled. Someone like Bronson Xerri can take them to a grand final.”

Keary, who retired from the NRL at the end of the 2024 season, shared insights from his own career, asserting that players typically aren’t informed so far in advance about a club’s plans to move on from them.

“Obviously something has gone on in the background but Cam Ciraldo came out in the press conference the other day and said to his knowledge he hadn’t heard that the extension had been knocked back,” Keary said.

Phil Gould, another prominent figure in the NRL, reportedly confirmed that he had not engaged in any discussions with Xerri’s management regarding his contract.

Implications for the Bulldogs and Xerri

The situation leaves both the Bulldogs and Xerri in a state of uncertainty. For the Bulldogs, managing the narrative around Xerri’s future will be crucial to maintaining team cohesion and public confidence. For Xerri, the focus will likely shift to proving his worth on the field and securing his professional future, whether with the Bulldogs or another club.

As the NRL season progresses, all eyes will be on how this situation unfolds, potentially setting a precedent for how clubs handle player contracts and internal communications.
