Work on Canberra’s light rail extension is progressing faster than anticipated, with London Circuit East expected to partially reopen to general traffic by July 2026, ten months earlier than initially planned. Despite the promising timeline, some local business owners remain skeptical about the project’s completion.
ACT Minister for Transport Chris Steel announced in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, March 17, that the construction is advancing well, surpassing several key targets. The minister highlighted that modifications to the construction schedule have been approved, allowing for accelerated work in front of the Sydney and Melbourne Buildings, which is expected to conclude by mid-2026.
Impact on Local Businesses
The construction has significantly impacted businesses along London Circuit, with some reporting a drop in trade by up to 50% due to noise, dust, and roadblocks. Nick Smith, owner and manager of Bar Rochford, expressed cautious optimism about the advanced construction timeline. “It’s a positive step in a negative situation,” he remarked, though he admitted he “can’t imagine” the project finishing as planned.
Anna Gray, owner of the Charcoal Restaurant, echoed similar sentiments. Her business, a staple in the Melbourne Building for over six decades, has struggled during the construction period. Gray noted relief at the accelerated schedule, especially after the “disaster” caused by the closure of Northbourne Avenue over the summer.
Construction Progress and Future Outlook
Minister Steel emphasized that the construction of all stops, rail alignment, and new landscaping is expected to be substantially complete by late this year. This progress will facilitate the commencement of initial systems and commissioning, with major on-site construction activities on track for completion by early 2027.
He stated, “We will then see impacts ease as intersection closures conclude and sections of the corridor progressively reopen during testing and commissioning activities throughout 2027.”
“Access to private land in these areas is now required for a shorter period of time, and will allow construction fencing to be moved from within the colonnades of both buildings to the outside – opening up a wider public realm … as soon as paving works are complete,” said Minister Steel.
Looking Ahead: Light Rail Services
Light rail services on the extension to Commonwealth Park are expected to commence in 2028. This development is part of a broader effort to enhance Canberra’s public transportation infrastructure, aiming to reduce traffic congestion and provide a sustainable transit option for the city’s growing population.
The announcement comes as a relief to many, but the road to completion remains challenging. Business owners and residents alike are hopeful that the expedited timeline will mitigate the ongoing disruptions and lead to a revitalized city center.
As the project progresses, the ACT government and construction teams will need to maintain clear communication with affected businesses and residents to ensure a smooth transition into the operational phase of the light rail extension.
