In August, a new wave of Australian architects will converge at The Architecture Symposium in Sydney to share their visions for the future of architectural practice. This full-day event will feature nine presenters and three intergenerational discussions, focusing on innovative approaches to design and practice. The symposium aims to explore how these architects are reshaping the industry through their unique processes and projects.

The symposium, set for August 1, promises to be a pivotal moment for the architectural community, offering insights into the evolving landscape of design and practice. Attendees will have the opportunity to earn up to 4.5 formal CPD points, with additional points available for members of the Design Institute of Australia.

Meet the Visionaries: A New Generation of Architects

Amelia Borg of Sibling Architecture

Amelia Borg, a 2025 juror and 2024 winner of the ArchitectureAu Award for Social Impact, leads Sibling Architecture with a focus on enhancing people’s lives through design. Her presentation will highlight Sibling’s user-first approach, characterized by its research-led and multidisciplinary nature.

Ben Berwick of Prevalent

Ben Berwick, at the helm of Sydney-based Prevalent, integrates architectural rigor with industrial innovation and ESG-driven design. His presentation will challenge current sustainability paradigms, building on insights from his recent interview with Rwanda-based consultant Fatou Kiné Dieye.

Simon Robinson of Office

Simon Robinson, alongside Steve Mintern, leads Office, a not-for-profit practice focused on design, research, and activism. Robinson will discuss their alternative practice model, which includes initiatives like 3553, a free exhibition space in Collingwood, aimed at retaining and repairing Melbourne’s public housing.

Liz Walsh of So. Architecture

As a co-recipient of the 2025 Tasmanian Architecture Awards Emerging Architect Prize, Liz Walsh will present the innovative practice model she developed with Alex Nielsen. Their studio, So. Architecture, is known for small-scale projects in Hobart, such as The Barn Tas and The Bae Tas.

Jack Gillmer-Lilley of SJB

Jack Gillmer-Lilley, a key figure in the Home exhibition at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale, focuses on First Nations design at SJB. His talk will explore the integration of Indigenous perspectives into practice to create equitable outcomes for Country.

Xavier De Kestelier of Hassell

Based in London, Xavier De Kestelier of Hassell is at the forefront of design technology and digital innovation. His presentation will explore the potential of new-generation technology in architectural practice, drawing from his contributions to discussions on AI integration.

Nic Brunsdon of Brunsdon Studio

Nic Brunsdon, director of Perth-based Brunsdon Studio, operates across Australia and South-East Asia. His talk will focus on the studio’s diversification over the past decade, informed by his involvement in discussions on the circular economy and his role as a juror for the AA Prize for Unbuilt Work.

Billy Maynard of Billy Maynard Architects

Billy Maynard, leading his eponymous studio in Sydney, will share insights from his unconventional career path. His practice recently won a design competition for a new Sydney war memorial, highlighting his unique approach to residential design.

Belqis Youssofzay of Youssofzay Hart

Belqis Youssofzay, co-leader of Youssofzay Hart, champions a collaborative approach informed by environmental considerations. Her presentation will delve into the practice’s commitment to addressing architecture’s impact on the environment.

The Architecture Symposium is part of the Design Speaks program organized by Architecture Media, with support from premium partners Planned Cover and Bondor, and hotel partner Ovolo.
