Former Today show presenter Richard Reid has candidly shared his experiences working with Karl Stefanovic during his tenure on the popular Australian breakfast program. In a revealing interview on the A Bit Rogue podcast, Reid reflected on his time with Stefanovic and co-host Lisa Wilkinson, describing it as far from pleasant, particularly during his final year on the show.
The American presenter, who served as the resident gossip guru on Today from 2008 to 2015, did not hold back in his critique. “I was gonna say fond memories of Today, [but] that was gonna be just a lie coming outta my mouth, you know?” Reid told host Skye Sydenham. He expressed gratitude towards the Nine Network for the opportunities he received but lamented the atmosphere during his last year.
Behind the Scenes Tensions
Reid’s revelations paint a picture of a tense environment behind the scenes. “The last year of that show, I hated it. I hated working with – not with Richard Wilkins – I hated working with Karl and everyone was unhappy. Everyone was miserable. Everyone hated each other,” Reid recalled.
He further disclosed that the situation was so dire that he frequently vented about Stefanovic and Wilkinson during therapy sessions. “They weren’t even listening to anything I was just saying,” he shared. A change in executive production brought financial scrutiny, leading to Reid’s departure as part of cost-cutting measures.
“I was the lowest paid of the highest paid. So they went from the bottom and started cutting people.”
Reflections on Power Dynamics
Despite the acrimony, Reid insists he holds no vendetta against Stefanovic. However, he wishes Stefanovic had been kinder, especially given his influential position. “You know what, on his side of the street, I’m sure it’s all fine. Because he had all the power,” Reid said. “I did not have the power. And so, you know, I’m not saying it’s like Weinstein or anything. But people in positions of power don’t realise how, um, abusive they can be with their power.”
Reid’s comments highlight the broader issue of power dynamics in media environments, where those in influential positions may inadvertently create challenging work atmospheres for their colleagues.
Maintaining Friendships and Moving Forward
While Reid no longer maintains a relationship with Stefanovic, he remains on good terms with Richard Wilkins, the longstanding entertainment reporter on Today. “It was a good run. I had such a good run on Today, and Richard Wilkins is still, I consider a very, very, very close friend,” Reid commented.
Reid’s career post-Today has been diverse. He appeared on Celebrity Apprentice Australia and found success in the reality TV realm, emerging as the winner of I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here in 2019.
“He was the best and we had great chemistry. And then an executive producer came in, a new one. He’s like, ‘I want to break up you and Richard Wilkins. He’s a dinosaur and you’re fresh and happening.’ And I was like, ‘I don’t think so.’ And he was like, ‘I’m the boss.’ So then they split Richard and I up.”
Reid’s reflections offer a glimpse into the complexities of television production and the personal dynamics that can shape the experiences of those involved. As he continues to navigate his career, Reid’s candidness about his past experiences serves as a reminder of the importance of supportive work environments.
