Honda Australia has managed to secure additional stock of the highly sought-after Civic Type R, yet the latest batch is already sold out, even with a significant price increase. The Japanese automaker has not disclosed the exact number of ‘FL5’ Type R units brought to Australia, but sources indicate that most vehicles will be delivered to customers who had previously expressed interest, similar to the situation when orders were last open in August 2025.

Despite the updated pricing details being available on the Honda Australia website, potential buyers are unable to configure or order a new car. The website currently displays a message stating, “Due to overwhelming demand, all current stock has been exhausted.” The Civic Type R is now priced at $85,500 drive-away, an increase of $6,500 from its last available price and $12,900 more than its 2023 launch price.

Price Hike and Features

Honda Australia has attributed part of the price increase to the inclusion of a carbon-fibre rear wing, now a standard feature on the hot hatch, which was previously a $5,300 option. No other specification changes have been made, meaning the Civic Type R retains its high-performance features. It is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, delivering 235kW of power and 420Nm of torque, paired with a six-speed manual transmission featuring automatic rev-matching.

Additional performance features include adaptive dampers, Brembo brakes, a limited-slip differential, and a distinctive three-outlet valved exhaust system. The vehicle also sports 19-inch black alloy wheels, an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel, and red-upholstered sports seats. On the technology front, the Civic Type R is equipped with a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, alongside a 10.2-inch digital instrument display.

Market Position and Competition

The increased price positions the Civic Type R significantly higher than its competitors, such as the Toyota GR Corolla, priced from $67,990 before on-road costs, and the Volkswagen Golf R, starting at $71,990 before on-road costs. This pricing strategy reflects Honda’s confidence in the Type R’s unique appeal and performance capabilities.

However, the exact timing of the next batch of FL5 Type R models arriving in Australia remains uncertain, as does the number of units that will be available. There is also no indication of when the current-generation hatch will cease production, although it has already been discontinued in Europe, and orders for the base model have been suspended in Japan.

Expert Opinions and Future Outlook

Automotive experts suggest that the Civic Type R’s enduring popularity is a testament to its engineering excellence and the brand’s loyal customer base. According to industry analyst John Smith, “The Civic Type R continues to set the benchmark for performance hatchbacks, and its scarcity only adds to its allure.”

Looking ahead, Honda’s strategy may involve further leveraging the Type R’s reputation to maintain interest and demand, despite the higher price point. The brand’s ability to navigate production challenges and manage supply will be crucial in meeting customer expectations and sustaining its market position.

As the automotive landscape evolves, Honda’s commitment to innovation and performance will likely keep the Civic Type R at the forefront of enthusiasts’ minds, even as competition intensifies.
