The US-Israeli campaign against Iran is intensifying, with Israeli evacuation orders in southern Beirut sparking fears of a rapidly widening conflict. The Israeli military has instructed residents to vacate parts of the Lebanese capital, leading to a chaotic exodus and traffic congestion in the densely populated city.

Lebanon was drawn into the conflict earlier this week when Hezbollah, the Iran-backed Lebanese militia, launched rockets into northern Israel. This prompted Israeli air strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs and other parts of Lebanon. Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich issued a stark warning, suggesting that the Dahiyeh suburb could soon resemble areas of Gaza.

“You wanted to bring hell on us but you have brought hell upon yourselves. The Dahiyeh will look like Khan Younis,” Smotrich declared, referencing a city in the Gaza Strip.

This is the first instance where Israel has ordered the evacuation of the entire Dahiyeh area, leading to hundreds of displaced individuals gathering in downtown Beirut. According to the Lebanese health ministry, at least 102 people have been killed in Israeli attacks since Monday.

Regional Escalation and Global Repercussions

The conflict, now in its sixth day, has spurred European nations to expedite military deployments to the Middle East, with global leaders bracing for potential economic impacts. Countries worldwide, including Australia, are organizing repatriation flights as the conflict restricts regional airspace and grounds flights.

Meanwhile, Israel has launched a fresh wave of strikes on Tehran. The United Arab Emirates has reported increased missile and drone threats from Iran, while explosions have been noted in Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain.

Iran has retaliated with missile launches at Israel and allegedly deployed drones into Azerbaijan, injuring four people in the Nakhchivan exclave.

Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev has vowed to retaliate, raising concerns about further conflict spillover. Iran’s armed forces have denied the drone attack, attributing it to Israel.

Maritime Tensions and Economic Impact

In maritime developments, Iran has vowed revenge for a US torpedo attack on an Iranian warship near Sri Lanka, killing over 80 sailors. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned the US of severe consequences for its actions.

The conflict has also impacted oil transportation, with nine oil tankers attacked in Gulf waters since the weekend. An Iranian remote-controlled boat targeted a Bahamas-flagged tanker, while another tanker off Kuwait suffered damage from an explosion.

Crude oil prices have surged by more than $10 a barrel, exacerbating affordability concerns and impacting US domestic issues ahead of midterm elections.

Political and Social Implications in Iran

In Iran, the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has led to political upheaval. His body was to lie in state in Tehran, but the memorial was postponed amid security concerns. Speculation surrounds the potential appointment of Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba, as his successor.

US President Donald Trump has expressed opposition to Mojtaba Khamenei’s potential leadership, advocating for a figure who would promote peace in Iran.

“Khamenei’s son is unacceptable to me. We want someone that will bring harmony and peace to Iran,” Trump reportedly told Axios.

The escalation coincides with the US House of Representatives preparing to vote on a war powers resolution aimed at curtailing President Trump’s actions against Iran. This follows a failed Senate vote, highlighting the political divide over the conflict.

As tensions continue to rise, the international community watches closely, with the potential for further escalation posing significant risks to regional stability and global economic conditions.
