Counterterrorism police are actively investigating a disturbance outside the Perth Mosque in Northbridge, following the overnight discovery of a white powder on the footpath, which authorities have described as “non-suspicious.” The incident occurred around 1 a.m., prompting immediate police response to the scene on William Street.

According to a police statement, officers identified the substance as a “white inert powder” placed on the mosque’s doorstep. The State Security Investigation Unit, responsible for addressing serious security threats, including terrorism, has been tasked with the investigation.

Context of Recent Terrorism Charges

This development follows the recent arrest of 20-year-old Jayson Michaels from Bindoon, charged with preparing an act of terrorism—marking the first such charge in Western Australia. Michaels was apprehended after police seized firearms and knives from his residence, located approximately 65 kilometers northeast of Perth. He appeared in the Perth Magistrates Court facing multiple charges.

In another related incident, less than a month ago, Liam Hall, 31, was charged with engaging in a terrorist act after allegedly throwing a homemade bomb into a crowd during an Invasion Day rally in Perth’s CBD. These events have heightened concerns about potential extremist activities in the region.

Government Response and Community Impact

In response to the recent events, senior government leaders, including the Premier, visited the Perth Mosque to engage with community leaders. Police Commissioner Col Blanch stated that CCTV footage is being reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation. “We don’t know if it was in fact targeted at the mosque, but certainly given the location we are doing an investigation,” he said, though further details on the disturbance remain undisclosed.

Exploring Radical Influences

Commissioner Blanch provided an update on the investigation into Michaels, revealing efforts to determine whether he had been radicalized by individuals within his “sphere of influence.” His parents, who reside with him in the semi-rural community, are reportedly cooperating with authorities.

The investigation has uncovered a white supremacy group chat on an encrypted Telegram service, involving both Australian and international members. While police do not currently link this group to established white supremacy organizations like the now-disbanded National Socialist Network, Commissioner Blanch noted,

“All we can see is a group of like-minded, meaning white supremacist, groups talking about their hate for other people in our community.”

Community Concerns Over Divisive Rhetoric

Perth Mosque Imam Sheikh Shakib Mohammad criticized divisive rhetoric from politicians and the broader community, highlighting its unhelpful nature. He specifically addressed comments by Pauline Hanson questioning the presence of “good Muslims” in discussions about the return of Islamic State militants’ families to Australia.

Imam Mohammad emphasized that his congregation consists of everyday Australians, including professionals such as doctors, nurses, and teachers. He urged a cessation of divisive rhetoric, asking,

“How on earth can you have a certain politician that demonises an entire faith group?”

Islamophobia and Its Consequences

The Imam lamented the normalization of Islamophobia, stating that it has become mainstream. He warned of the repercussions for vulnerable individuals, such as visibly Muslim schoolgirls, who may face increased hostility due to reckless language. “When we have good people that remain silent, when you know people are being attacked … whether it be the schoolgirl on the bus that’s wearing a headscarf who’s visibly Muslim … vulnerable people like that schoolgirl on the bus [are] going to face the brunt of this reckless language,” he added.

As investigations continue, the community remains vigilant, seeking reassurance and support from authorities to prevent further incidents and foster unity amidst rising tensions.
