The first off-road vehicle from BMW’s M division may soon be a reality, according to the head of the performance branch. This development marks a potential shift for BMW M, renowned for its high-performance racing and road models, which traditionally focus on on-road prowess and speed.

The German automaker is reportedly planning to introduce a direct competitor to the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen and the Land Rover Defender, which would be BMW’s first production model with significant off-road capabilities. This move could redefine the brand’s performance portfolio by venturing into rugged terrain.

Exploring New Terrain: BMW M’s Off-Road Aspirations

When asked by CarExpert if the iconic M badge could grace an off-road vehicle, BMW M boss Frank van Meel suggested the idea is not beyond the realm of possibility. “I could imagine M on off-road products,” van Meel stated, referencing the brand’s racing heritage that includes not just traditional circuits but also events like the famed Paris-Dakar rally.

“I could imagine M on off-road products, because if you come from racing there’s not only the WEC [World Endurance Championship] and IMSA [International Motor Sports Association], but the Paris-Dakar,” said Frank van Meel.

The Paris-Dakar, now simply known as ‘Dakar’, is a grueling off-road race that challenges vehicles across desert landscapes. BMW has a storied history in this race, having secured multiple victories in the motorcycle division and achieving success with BMW-owned Mini in the car category as recently as 2021.

Potential Market Impact and Production Plans

While not officially confirmed, the rugged BMW model, reportedly codenamed G74, is expected to be manufactured in the United States, with production slated to begin in 2029. This timeline aligns with the anticipated phase-out of the V8 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) XM, which is projected to remain in production until November 2028.

Mr. van Meel’s comments coincide with another year of record-breaking sales for BMW M vehicles, both in Australia and globally. The expansion of the M badge onto a broader range of models, including those with M packages and upgrades, has contributed significantly to this growth.

In Australia, M models account for nearly one in four BMW sales, reflecting the brand’s strong market presence and consumer demand.
