Broc Feeney’s quest for redemption has begun spectacularly in Sydney, as he clinched the first Supercars race victory of the year, just months after a heartbreaking end to his championship hopes. The Triple Eight star celebrated the team’s first Ford victory since 2009, following a transition from the Camaro that brought him agonizingly close to championship glory in 2025.
The race at Sydney Motorsport Park was a testament to strategic brilliance, with Red Bull Racing’s rapid pit stop propelling Feeney ahead of the Blanchard Racing Team’s James Golding and Aaron Cameron, who had secured the front row earlier on Friday. Feeney seized the opportunity, securing his first win of the 2026 season in the 100km sprint.
“I remembered how to drive, which is a good thing!” Feeney exclaimed post-race. “To join Ford once again and get the first win – that’s a dream come true. This is an unreal start to our second life at Ford.”
The Road to Redemption
Feeney’s victory marks a significant milestone following the 2025 championship disappointment in Adelaide. Speaking to Fox Motorsport, he expressed relief and enthusiasm for moving past last year’s setback. “Hopefully everyone can stop talking … and we can move on,” he said, visibly thrilled to continue his strong form.
Reflecting on his confidence, Feeney noted, “I had the faith coming here this weekend – the first time I drove this car I was quietly confident. Just to come here and execute, the team did a great job for me to get in the lead there. To get out in front was great and we could manage the race. Two more to go.”
The race concluded with Cameron and Golding securing second and third places, delivering a double podium for the Blanchard Racing Team (BRT).
Challenges and Triumphs on the Track
Earlier in the race, Shell V-Racing’s Brodie Kostecki received the first penalty of the year for a bump and run on Zach Bates. Meanwhile, Cooper Murray was forced to retire on Lap 8 due to steering failure, making him the only non-finisher.
“Broc Feeney looks ominous to me,” praised Garth Tander. “Once he got the race lead, he just managed it beautifully.”
As the event progresses, qualifying for race two is set to begin at 3:40 PM AEDT, with the main event scheduled for 7:35 PM.
BRT’s Historic Pole and the Rise of New Contenders
Just a year ago, the Blanchard Racing Team faced turmoil, with their cars colliding in a chaotic scene in Sydney. Fast forward to Friday, and they were the center of attention in the Supercars world, kicking off the 2026 season with a front-row lockout at Sydney Motorsport Park.
James Golding, who joined BRT from PremiAir Racing in the off-season, made history as the first Gen3 era driver to clock a 1.27.90 at the venue, securing pole position. Aaron Cameron ensured a 1-2 finish for BRT, a remarkable turnaround from their previous struggles.
“It’s incredible,” Cameron said. “I haven’t slept for a few days … to do that, it’s fricking awesome. To get 1-2, it just doesn’t happen. We had two cars drive into each other out of the pit exit (in 2025) … we were nowhere and slow as hell! To come here now and be quick as a team… I just love it. I can’t wait for the year. It’s a good place to start.”
This marks BRT’s first pole position win and only the second for Golding in his Supercars career. “Oh mate, honestly I’ve got no words,” he said during the cheque presentation. “Just absolutely incredible job by the whole team – obviously I get the joy to finish it off. But it goes down to all their hard work.”
“Think about this qualifying session 12 months ago! These cars crashed into each other! They didn’t even qualify!” Garth Tander remarked in awe of BRT’s progress. “How far has this team come in 12 months?”
The Mustang lineup was strong, with Broc Feeney and Matt Payne on the second row. Anton de Pasquale was the first Camaro driver, with Zach Bates alongside him. The top 10 was rounded out by Cam Waters, Will Brown, Thomas Randle, and Andre Heimgartner. Notably, reigning champion Chaz Mostert will start from a surprising 20th position.
The opening race of the 2026 Repco Supercars Championship is set to begin at 7:50 PM local time, promising more thrilling action as the season unfolds.
