Hawthorn’s Strategic Depth on Display

In a notable match-up, Hawthorn secured a 17-point victory over Geelong, finishing 111-94. This win highlighted the Hawks’ depth and strategic planning, particularly in the midfield. Former top-10 draft pick Josh Ward emerged as a potential leader for increased inside midfield minutes, compensating for the absence of Will Day and the departure of James Worpel.

Hawthorn’s approach appears to be a rotational ‘committee’ strategy, with players like Cam Mackenzie and Connor Macdonald contributing significantly. The starting ball-up mix featured Lloyd Meek, Jai Newcombe, Ward, and Macdonald, with others like Conor Nash, Dylan Moore, Nick Watson, and Josh Weddle rotating through the midfield.

“Players’ exposure in certain roles — Connor Macdonald and Josh Weddle having a play around the ball, seeing that midfield mix with Ward and Mackenzie and those guys (that) are going to spend a bit of time there,” said assistant coach David Hale.

Connor Macdonald, in particular, has been impressive throughout the summer, expanding his role beyond a half-forward opportunist. His ability to find space and create attacking opportunities was noted by commentators, with Kayo Sports’ Sam Hargreaves suggesting the Hawks might employ a varied midfield rotation rather than relying on a single star recruit.

Geelong’s Challenges and Opportunities

Geelong, on the other hand, faced challenges in their 17-point loss to Hawthorn. The match highlighted areas for improvement as they prepare for the upcoming season. Despite the loss, the Cats showed glimpses of potential, with young players gaining valuable experience in the pre-season setting.

As the pre-season progresses, Geelong will look to refine their strategies and build on the lessons learned from these simulations. The team remains focused on integrating new talent and adjusting their game plan to enhance their competitiveness.

Battle for List Spots at Hawthorn

A key storyline for Hawthorn is the battle for the club’s two vacant list spots under the Supplementary Selection Period (SSP). While there are two spots available, the club may opt to fill only one at this early stage. Ex-Roos-listed backman Flynn Perez has emerged as a frontrunner, impressing with his performance during the simulations.

Perez’s standout moment came with a long-range goal and a remarkable kick from half-back, setting up a scoring chain. His ability to slot into the backline and his effective ball use have positioned him as the “clubhouse leader” for a list spot. Fellow SSP hopeful Jack Riding also showed promise in defense, but Perez’s consistent performance has set him apart.

“Perez has been able to slot into the backline with a few guys missing (due to) playing State of Origin. He’s shown he can use the ball well. His kicking today at times was really good,” commented David Hale.

Looking Ahead to the 2026 AFL Season

The pre-season simulations are providing valuable insights into team dynamics and player capabilities. As clubs continue to refine their strategies, fans can anticipate an exciting 2026 AFL season. The performances in these early matches will influence team selections and tactical decisions as the season unfolds.

With the official season start approaching, teams are focused on honing their skills and addressing any gaps identified during the simulations. The competition promises to be fierce, with clubs eager to make their mark and vie for the championship.
