Information from the latest regulatory filings has unveiled details of BYD’s upcoming flagship SUV, the “Great Tang” (Datang). Positioned as a 9-series product within the brand’s Dynasty series, the new vehicle is set to become the lineup’s top-tier offering, targeting the market segment above 400,000 yuan (approximately 57,000 USD). The Great Tang is expected to make its official debut in the first half of this year.

The Great Tang showcases a brand-new design language. Its front fascia features a closed grille complemented by star-ring-like chrome trim and a “Tang” logo rendered in ancient small seal script. Vertical air ducts on either side of the front bumper add a touch of sportiness. Along the sides, the SUV adopts newly designed semi-hidden door handles and intricate multi-spoke wheels. The rear is characterized by a full-width taillight cluster.

Dimensions and Powertrain Options

In terms of dimensions, the Great Tang measures 5263 (or 5302) mm in length, 1999 mm in width, and 1790 (or 1800) mm in height. The wheelbase extends to 3130 mm, and the vehicle’s gross mass is listed at 3245 kg. These measurements place the Great Tang firmly in the full-size SUV category, a notable step up from current Tang models.

The models submitted for approval offer three powertrain configurations: single-motor versions with outputs of 300 kW (402 hp) and 370 kW (496 hp), and a dual-motor version featuring a 215 kW (288 hp) front motor and a 370 kW (496 hp) rear motor. This variety in powertrain options allows BYD to cater to a broad range of consumer preferences and performance needs.

Technological Advancements and Market Position

The Great Tang is built on the Super e-platform, which suggests that it will feature advanced technologies such as megawatt flash charging and a 30,000 rpm motor. Furthermore, early tests of camouflaged prototypes indicate that the Datang will be the first BYD model to feature rear-wheel steering technology. This innovation is expected to enhance the vehicle’s handling and maneuverability, particularly in urban environments.

The move represents a strategic push by BYD to position the Great Tang against rivals like the Aito M9 and Li Auto L9. With a length of over 5.2 meters and a wheelbase of over 3.1 meters, the Great Tang is significantly larger than its predecessors, emphasizing its status as a full-size flagship SUV.

Implications for the Automotive Market

According to industry experts, the introduction of the Great Tang could have significant implications for the automotive market, particularly in the luxury SUV segment. BYD’s decision to incorporate cutting-edge technology and a distinctive design language reflects a broader trend among automakers to blend innovation with aesthetic appeal.

“The Great Tang represents BYD’s commitment to redefining luxury in the electric vehicle space,” said an industry analyst. “Its combination of size, power, and technology positions it as a formidable competitor in the high-end SUV market.”

This development follows a period of rapid growth for BYD, which has seen its market share expand significantly in recent years. The company’s focus on electric vehicles aligns with global trends towards sustainability and reduced emissions, further enhancing its appeal to environmentally conscious consumers.

Looking Ahead

The announcement of the Great Tang comes as BYD continues to strengthen its position in the global automotive market. As the company prepares for the official debut of its flagship SUV, industry observers will be watching closely to see how the Great Tang is received by consumers and competitors alike.

Meanwhile, BYD’s ongoing investment in research and development suggests that the Great Tang may be just the beginning of a new era for the company’s Dynasty series. With its blend of luxury, performance, and innovation, the Great Tang is poised to make a significant impact in the automotive world.
