For a UFC fighter nicknamed “God of War” who dismantles opponents in the Octagon with ruthless efficiency, Benoit Saint Denis speaks softly. There is no trash talking his rivals, no chest-thumping bravado, no attempts at self-promotion. Yet, the French fighter’s presence in the cage is anything but understated.

Saint Denis, a former special forces soldier, is set to face Dan Hooker in the co-main event of UFC 325 in Sydney. This bout promises to be a clash of titans, as Hooker is known for his brutal wars in the Octagon. The fight is part of an electrifying card headlined by UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski, who will defend his title against Brazil’s Diego Lopes in his hometown.

Benoit Saint Denis: A Fighter’s Journey

At 30 years old, Saint Denis has carved out a formidable reputation in the lightweight division. His recent performances have been nothing short of spectacular, with three consecutive victories that have cemented his status as a genuine contender at 155 pounds. His last fight against Beneil Dariush at UFC 323 was particularly noteworthy, ending in just 16 seconds with a devastating left hook.

“I think fans will like this fight,” Saint Denis told Fox Sports Australia. “I’m hoping to get the best Dan Hooker possible – and may the best man win.” Despite Hooker being the crowd favorite, Saint Denis remains unfazed. “I have been fighting in enemy territory since I was 19 years old,” he said, referencing his military background.

From the Battlefield to the Octagon

Saint Denis’s military career is as impressive as his fighting record. Serving with the French Special Air Service, First Marine Airborne Regiment, he was deployed to Mali and across West Africa, engaging in counter-terrorism operations against groups like Boko Haram. His unit was also tasked with protecting key figures in the French government, including former President Francois Hollande.

“It taught me to be a grown man,” he said. “To know the geopolitical subjects better and just grow as an adult. It also helped me fall in love with peace. And how you have to fight your ass for it.”

Saint Denis was awarded both the Medal of the Nation’s Gratitude and the Combatant’s Cross for his service. Now, his life has taken a different turn as a professional athlete. “I’m a sport athlete now and there’s a lot of liberty in this sport that makes it appealing,” he said. “It’s a fight of course – but it’s a fight sport and I have developed the mentality to get through injuries and everything.”

The “God of War” Moniker

The nickname “God of War” is a nod to both his military past and his current career. “I was in Mali in 2019 – only 19 years old – to fight Boko Haram and other Islamic terrorist groups there,” he explained. His brothers, who are big fans of the military and the God of War franchise, thought the nickname was fitting.

When asked what he might be doing if he wasn’t a prizefighter, Saint Denis didn’t hesitate. “Maybe I’d still be with the Special Air Service,” he smiled, reflecting on his past.

Looking Ahead to UFC 325

As UFC 325 approaches, the anticipation for the Saint Denis vs. Hooker fight continues to build. Both fighters are known for their resilience and skill, promising a thrilling encounter for fans. The event, set in Sydney, not only highlights the local hero Volkanovski but also brings international attention to the rising star that is Benoit Saint Denis.

With his unique blend of military discipline and athletic prowess, Saint Denis is a fighter who embodies the spirit of determination and resilience. As he steps into the Octagon, fans will be watching closely to see if the “God of War” can continue his ascent in the UFC ranks.
