The heavily upgraded 2026 Mercedes-Benz S-Class has made its world debut, marking a significant evolution for the German automaker’s flagship sedan. Unveiled five years after the W223-series debuted in 2020, the latest iteration boasts a striking new design and a powerful new V8 engine.
Mercedes-Benz describes this update as the most comprehensive mid-cycle refresh in the S-Class’s history, with over 50% of its components newly developed or refined. This extensive overhaul aims to maintain its competitive edge against luxury rivals like the BMW 7 Series and Porsche Panamera.
Under the Hood: The New V8 Engine
The centerpiece of the 2026 S-Class is the newly introduced petrol V8 engine, codenamed M177 Evo. This 4.0-litre twin-turbo engine, crafted by AMG, features a flat-plane crankshaft for enhanced refinement and efficiency. It also incorporates 48V mild-hybrid technology with a 17kW starter-generator.
In the S580 model, this engine produces 393kW of power and 750Nm of torque, offering improved performance over its predecessor while maintaining the same fuel consumption rate of 10.6L/100km.
“The S-Class remains the flagship of the Mercedes-Benz portfolio and a core expression of our brand,” said Mercedes-Benz Australia spokesperson Monika Paikert.
Design and Technological Innovations
The 2026 S-Class introduces several design enhancements, including an optionally illuminated three-pointed star emblem and a 20% larger illuminated grille. The new twin-star Digital Light headlights, featuring micro-LED technology, preview Mercedes-Benz’s next-generation lighting signature.
With its elegant design, the updated S-Class stands in contrast to the futuristic aesthetics of competitors like the BMW i7. The new grille, adorned with three-dimensional chrome stars, becomes a defining feature of the S-Class identity.
The enhanced Digital Light system expands the illumination field by 40%, improving visibility while reducing energy consumption. The Ultra Range high-beam system now offers a reach of up to 600 meters, enhancing safety on poorly lit roads.
Interior Luxury and Comfort
Inside, the S-Class continues to set the standard for luxury sedans. The long-wheelbase model transforms the rear into a business lounge with exquisitely sculpted seats and premium amenities. New features include a full-length rear center console with wireless charging, a refrigerated compartment, and temperature-controlled cupholders.
The MBUX high-end Rear Seat Entertainment System, featuring 13.1-inch displays with integrated HD cameras, supports video conferencing platforms like Microsoft Teams and Zoom, allowing passengers to work on the go.
“With the introduction of the Manufaktur Exclusive program, we see demand from customers who value customisation and individuality,” added Paikert.
Market Challenges and Future Prospects
Despite its luxurious offerings, the S-Class faces challenges in a market increasingly dominated by luxury SUVs. In 2025, the S-Class was outsold by the Mercedes-Benz GLS and BMW X7 in Australia. However, Mercedes-Benz remains optimistic about the S-Class’s relevance and appeal.
The upcoming VLE electric people mover from Mercedes-Benz may also compete with the S-Class in some markets, offering limo-like luxury and versatility. Nevertheless, the VLE’s introduction in Australia remains unconfirmed.
Mercedes-Benz is also expanding its customisation options with the Manufaktur Made to Measure program, allowing customers to create one-of-a-kind vehicles with a wide array of paint and interior color choices.
Advanced Safety and Driving Assistance
Safety remains a hallmark of the S-Class, with an enhanced adaptive restraint system and up to 15 airbags. The updated MB.DRIVE driving and parking assistance systems benefit from extended sensor technology and a new computer architecture, offering improved assistance features.
The S-Class’s semi-autonomous driving capabilities are supported by the latest Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), which integrates all vehicle systems into a single intelligent ecosystem, enabling over-the-air updates to keep the vehicle digitally current.
As the 2026 S-Class prepares for its launch in the fourth quarter of the year, it promises to redefine luxury and performance in the automotive world, ensuring its continued status as a symbol of automotive excellence.
