US President Donald Trump has taken to Truth Social to share a private message from French President Emmanuel Macron, proposing a G7 meeting in Paris following the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The message, posted as a screenshot, included Macron’s suggestion to invite several international leaders to the meeting’s margins, and expressed confusion over Trump’s intentions regarding Greenland.

In the messages, Macron extended an invitation to Trump for a dinner in Paris and mentioned the possibility of including representatives from Ukraine, Denmark, Syria, and Russia in discussions. Notably absent from the post were any responses from Trump. Both the White House and Macron’s office have remained silent on the matter, though a source close to Macron confirmed the message’s authenticity.

Greenland at the Center of Tensions

The release of these messages follows a decision by EU leaders to convene an emergency summit in Brussels, spurred by Trump’s threats to impose new tariffs on European goods over his interest in acquiring Greenland. Macron has publicly criticized Trump’s tariff threats, labeling them as unacceptable.

Trump’s social media post came shortly after he announced plans to levy a 200 percent tariff on French wines and champagnes, a move he claims would pressure Macron to support his Board of Peace initiative aimed at global conflict resolution. The timing of Macron’s messages remains unclear, though he is scheduled to attend the Davos forum and return to Paris the same day, according to Elysee aides.

International Reactions and Strategic Concerns

In another post, Trump criticized Britain’s agreement to transfer sovereignty of Diego Garcia in the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, calling it an “act of total weakness.” He suggested this decision highlighted the strategic necessity of acquiring Greenland, given Diego Garcia’s importance as a US-UK air base.

The Chagos Islands deal, which allows Britain to maintain control of the air base under a long-term lease, had previously been endorsed by the US. Trump warned of potential reactions from China and Russia, emphasizing the need for strategic assets like Greenland.

Diplomatic Engagements and Global Forums

Trump also mentioned a “very good” call with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, discussing Greenland’s importance for national and global security. He agreed to meet various parties at the Davos forum, though specifics were not disclosed.

The annual economic forum in Davos will host world leaders, including Trump, Macron, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Trump is set to deliver a speech and will be accompanied by key advisors, such as Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Board of Peace Initiative and China’s Involvement

Trump’s Board of Peace initiative, aimed at resolving global conflicts, has extended an invitation to China, among other countries. Beijing has yet to decide on its participation, despite a recent trade truce with Washington.

While some governments have reacted cautiously, diplomats express concern that the initiative might undermine the United Nations. The Board of Peace intends to address the Gaza conflict initially, with plans to expand to other global issues. Trump would chair the board for life, with member states serving three-year terms unless contributing $1 billion each.

The unfolding diplomatic maneuvers and strategic discussions underscore the complex geopolitical landscape, with Greenland emerging as a focal point of contention and negotiation.
