Zeekr has unveiled its latest plug-in hybrid SUV, the 8X, which is poised to make a significant impact in the automotive market. The new model is set to launch in China during the first half of 2026, with potential plans for expansion into the Australian market. This move positions the 8X between the mid-size electric 7X, expected in Australia by late 2025, and the flagship 9X, which debuted in China last year.
According to Car News China, the 8X will be available in both five- and six-seat configurations, offering versatility for a range of consumers. While Zeekr Australia has expressed interest in introducing plug-in hybrid vehicles locally, no confirmed plans or timelines have been announced. A spokesperson for Zeekr Australia stated,
“While we’re excited to see the positive reception these vehicles have received in China, we don’t have confirmed plans or timing to share regarding their potential introduction to the Australian market at this stage.”
Technical Specifications and Performance
The 8X is set to impress with its advanced engineering. It will feature a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, delivering 205kW of power. The engine is paired with either 55.1kWh or 70kWh ternary lithium batteries, developed through the CATL-Geely joint venture. This configuration allows for an impressive WLTC electric-only range of 256km and 328km, respectively.
In comparison, the 9X model boasts a rapid charging capability, with the 70kWh battery able to charge from 20 to 80 percent in just nine minutes. The 8X is expected to share similar performance metrics, although specific details on its electric motors remain undisclosed. Car News China reports that the flagship 8X variant will utilize three electric motors, achieving a total system output of up to 1030kW, mirroring the 9X’s performance that accelerates to 100km/h in 3.1 seconds.
Design and Features
The 8X will continue Zeekr’s tradition of combining luxury with cutting-edge technology. Built on Geely’s SEA-S platform, the SUV will incorporate a 900V electrical system and the Haohan AI Digital Chassis, which dynamically adjusts the suspension based on road conditions. A comprehensive suite of active safety and driver assistance technologies will be available, including cameras, radar, and LiDAR.
In terms of aesthetics, the 8X presents a sleeker design compared to the 9X, yet retains a distinctive chrome grille reminiscent of the flagship SUV and the 009 electric people mover. The vehicle measures 5100mm in length, 1998mm in width, and 1780mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3069mm, positioning it closer in size to the 9X than the 7X. This makes it slightly larger than an Audi Q7, offering a commanding presence on the road.
Market Position and Future Prospects
Zeekr, a brand under the umbrella of Geely, which also owns Volvo and Lotus, was established in 2021 and has been rapidly expanding its global footprint. The brand’s introduction to the Australian market in 2024 was marked by the launch of the electric 009 people mover and the X small SUV. The subsequent release of the 7X in 2025 marked a turning point, boosting the brand’s popularity.
With the unveiling of the 8X, Zeekr is poised to further solidify its position in the luxury SUV segment. The brand’s aggressive expansion strategy includes potential entries into new markets, such as the United States, as hinted by Geely. The 8X’s combination of luxury, performance, and advanced technology positions it as a formidable competitor in the global automotive landscape.
As the automotive industry continues to evolve towards electrification, Zeekr’s innovative approach and strategic market positioning could set new standards for plug-in hybrid vehicles. The 8X’s anticipated launch in China and potential introduction to international markets will be closely watched by industry analysts and consumers alike.
