Sydney Kings delivered one of their most courageous performances of the season, overcoming significant setbacks to secure a thrilling 97-94 victory over Melbourne United at Qudos Bank Arena on Sunday. The victory propels the Kings into third place, adding to Melbourne’s recent struggles.

Despite losing Matthew Dellavedova to a suspected concussion in the first half, the Kings managed to maintain a lead for most of the game. The absence of two starters, including Dellavedova, did not deter the Kings from keeping their rivals at bay, even as Melbourne attempted a late comeback.

Key Performances and Game Highlights

The game was marked by standout performances, particularly from Kendric Davis and Jaylin Galloway. Davis, a strong contender in the MVP race, overcame a slow start to finish with 23 points and six assists. Galloway was nearly flawless, scoring a game-high 27 points on 10-11 shooting.

Melbourne’s Jesse Edwards led his team with 23 points, while Chris Goulding added 21 points, showcasing his long-range shooting skills. Despite their efforts, Melbourne could not overcome the Kings’ resilience, especially after a crucial missed shot by Goulding that could have forced overtime.

Injury Concerns for the Kings

The victory was bittersweet for Sydney, as they faced an injury crisis with Dellavedova’s exit. Already missing key players Xavier Cooks and Bul Kuol, the Kings now face uncertainty regarding Dellavedova’s availability for their upcoming clash with Brisbane at HoopsFest.

The injury occurred when Dash Daniels fell on Dellavedova, causing him to hit his head on the floor. His absence for the remainder of the game raises concerns about the Kings’ depth as they continue their campaign.

Battle of the Boomers

The matchup between Dellavedova and Goulding was a highlight, with both players vying for spots on the Boomers’ roster for the upcoming World Cup. Their early exchanges set the tone for an exciting contest, with both veterans displaying their prowess from beyond the arc.

Jaylin Galloway also made a strong case for inclusion in the national team, contributing significantly in the first quarter and helping the Kings establish an early lead.

Hawks’ Title Defence in Jeopardy

Meanwhile, Illawarra Hawks coach Justin Tatum remains optimistic about his team’s title defence despite a 101-96 loss to the New Zealand Breakers. The defeat leaves the Hawks’ playoff hopes hanging by a thread, with their record now at 8-15.

After a disappointing overtime loss to South East Melbourne, the Hawks needed a win against the Breakers to stay in contention. However, a third consecutive defeat has pushed them further from the playoff picture.

“Unless it statistically says it is, and … we’ve got to rely on a situation with other teams, but we’re going to keep playing these next 10 games as if we have a chance,” Tatum stated, emphasizing his team’s determination.

Turnovers and Free-Throw Disparity

The Hawks’ struggles were compounded by turnovers and a lopsided free-throw count. Committing 19 turnovers and being out-hustled by a more determined Breakers team, the Hawks could not capitalize on their opportunities.

Tatum expressed frustration over the free-throw disparity, noting that the Hawks have not “won” that statistic at home since early November. The Breakers made 21 of 28 free throws compared to the Hawks’ 9 of 14.

Breakers Bounce Back

For the Breakers, the victory was a much-needed response following a heavy defeat to the Kings. Coach Petteri Koponen praised his team’s energy and competitiveness, which were evident throughout the game.

“We were much better – the energy, the fight – everything was there,” Koponen remarked, highlighting the team’s improved performance.

Led by Parker Jackson-Cartwright’s 23 points, all five Breakers starters scored in double figures, showcasing a balanced attack that proved too much for the Hawks.

The Breakers now face an uphill battle to reach the play-in round, needing to win their remaining games. However, their performance against the Hawks has given them a glimmer of hope as they strive for a strong finish to the season.
