Jamarra Ugle-Hagan, the promising key forward for the Western Bulldogs, has candidly shared his battle with mental health issues, including experiencing frequent suicidal thoughts. Despite these challenges, Ugle-Hagan has expressed his desire to continue playing for the Bulldogs beyond his current contract, which extends to the end of 2026.

In a heartfelt interview on the “Rip Through It” podcast, Ugle-Hagan opened up about the personal struggles that led him to take a leave of absence from the club in April. During this time, he sought solace and recovery at a health retreat, focusing on his mental and physical well-being.

Struggles and Recovery

Ugle-Hagan, who has not played since September last year, described the impact of his mental health challenges on his life and career. “All the noises actually sent me to a rehab facility for my mental health,” he revealed. “It got to a point where I had to give my car to a mate so I couldn’t drive, I just didn’t trust myself driving.”

“There were times when I would think about – to be honest with you – just not even worth even living. I went through a struggle where I didn’t want to leave the house. I hit rock bottom, and found basement.”

His candid admission highlights the severity of his condition, with suicidal thoughts occurring frequently. Ugle-Hagan noted the isolation he felt during this period, which exacerbated his mental health struggles.

Support and Future Aspirations

Despite these challenges, Ugle-Hagan has found support within the club, particularly from CEO Ameet Bains, whom he affectionately referred to as his “brother.” The support from the club and his teammates has been instrumental in his recovery journey. “You go in there, they look after you and they genuinely love you in there,” he said, though he admitted to feeling anxious about returning after his long absence.

Ugle-Hagan remains optimistic about his future with the Bulldogs. He expressed a strong desire to win a premiership with the team and hopes to extend his contract beyond 2026. “It’s the Bulldogs until my contract runs out and then hopefully they offer me another one, but we will see how we go,” he stated.

Broader Context and Implications

The young athlete’s openness about his mental health issues sheds light on the broader challenges faced by professional athletes. The pressure to perform, coupled with public scrutiny, can significantly impact their mental well-being.
