Cooper Cronk has voiced a strong opinion regarding the Brisbane Broncos’ halves pairing, suggesting that the team should maintain the successful combination of Adam Reynolds and Ben Hunt, even when Ezra Mam returns from suspension mid-season. This recommendation comes after the duo’s impressive performance in the Broncos’ dominant 50-14 victory.

In that match, Reynolds delivered a standout performance with a linebreak assist and three try assists, while Hunt contributed 34 run metres, a linebreak, a linebreak assist, and a try. Their synergy on the field has sent a clear warning to other teams in the National Rugby League (NRL).

Cronk’s Strategic Insight

Originally brought to the Broncos to play hooker and provide cover for the halves, Ben Hunt’s role has evolved significantly. Cronk, speaking on the “Matty and Cronk” show, emphasized the importance of keeping Hunt in the halves with Reynolds.

“That combination of Adam Reynolds and Ben Hunt is going to be a very, very good thing,” Cronk asserted. “When Ezra Mam comes back, I wouldn’t move Ben Hunt. I don’t care what Ezra Mam does from here on out. Ben Hunt is my five-eighth for the rest of the year.”

Cronk’s argument is not solely based on performance metrics but also considers the cultural dynamics within the team. He believes that the leadership and decision-making skills of Reynolds are crucial for the Broncos, especially given the talent they possess in players like Kotoni Staggs, Selwyn Cobbo, and Reece Walsh.

Challenges and Opportunities

There were initial concerns that having two prominent halfbacks could lead to conflicts in playmaking roles. However, Cronk praised Hunt’s adaptability and willingness to let Reynolds take the lead, which was evident in their match against the Roosters.

“I like what Ben Hunt did,” Cronk explained. “He has gone from being a first receiver halfback dominating for the Dragons to picking his moments on the left-hand side and complementing what Adam Reynolds and Reece Walsh have.”

Matty Johns, another respected voice in rugby league, agrees with Cronk’s assessment. He highlights the advantage of having two experienced playmakers, a luxury not many teams enjoy, especially after the departure of Jarome Luai from the defending premiers.

The Role of Ezra Mam

Ezra Mam’s return from a 10-game suspension presents a dilemma for coach Michael Maguire. While Mam’s talents are undeniable, his role upon return remains uncertain. Johns suggests that Mam could provide valuable flexibility, potentially playing as a utility at No.14.

“Ezra is going to give Madge flexibility,” Johns said. “He can play him at No.14. The other thing he can do as well is one thing about Adam and Ben is they are not spring chickens.”

This flexibility could be crucial in managing the workload of the ageing playmakers, ensuring they remain fresh and effective throughout the season.

Looking Ahead

The Broncos’ strategy will be pivotal as they aim for success in the 2025 season. Cronk believes that timing the peak performance of Reynolds and Hunt towards the end of the season could be the key to their finals campaign.

“And they can time their run for the two 34-year-olds to play their best footy at the back end of the year,” Cronk concluded.

As the season progresses, the Broncos’ ability to maintain their tactical advantage with short side plays and strategic rotations will be closely watched. The early signs are promising, with the team looking polished and dangerous, a testament to their off-season preparation and strategic planning.

Ultimately, the decision on how to integrate Mam back into the lineup will be a test of Maguire’s coaching acumen, as he balances the immediate needs of the team with long-term aspirations for a championship run.
