EXCLUSIVE: The acclaimed LGBTQ+ ice hockey drama Heated Rivalry is set to return for a second season, as Canadian streaming platform Crave has officially greenlit the series. HBO Max will continue its collaboration, securing rights for the U.S. and Australia, while also expanding its reach to new territories through deals with distributor Sphere Abacus.
The Warner Bros Discovery-owned HBO Max has acquired rights for both seasons across Europe (excluding the UK, Ireland, Spain, and Turkey), Asia, and Latin America. Additionally, Neon/Sky New Zealand will return as a partner for the second season. The HBO Max agreement in Asia includes Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Philippines, Macau, Sri Lanka, and Nepal.
Global Expansion and Cultural Impact
Heated Rivalry, created by Canadian writer-director Jacob Tierney, has quickly become a flagship show for Crave. The series follows two top professional hockey players, Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov, who secretly develop a romantic relationship amidst their fierce rivalry. This narrative has resonated with audiences, establishing the show as a significant cultural phenomenon.
The series debuted with impressive viewership, growing by nearly 400% in its initial seven-day streams, according to data from mParticle and Amazon Channels. Its cultural impact is evident as it became a trending topic on social media platforms, particularly in hockey-enthusiastic Canada, during its premiere weekend.
“Heated Rivalry represents the very best of what Canadian creators can deliver: Rich characters, compelling drama, and a world audiences want to live in,” said Justin Stockman, VP Content and Programming at Bell Media.
Behind the Scenes and Future Prospects
The series, based on Rachel Reid’s best-selling book series Game Changers, features a talented ensemble cast including Hudson Williams, Connor Storrie, François Arnaud, and Sophie Nélisse. The narrative explores themes of love, denial, and self-discovery over an eight-year period, challenging the protagonists to balance their personal and professional lives.
As the show’s popularity grows, more international deals are anticipated. Reports suggest that several UK buyers are keen on acquiring the series, with negotiations reportedly underway. The show’s creators, Tierney and executive producer Brendan Brady, expressed gratitude for the series’ success and the opportunity to continue the story.
“Watching our show become an international phenomenon has been extraordinary. We’re profoundly grateful to everyone that has been on this journey with us. Being renewed for a second season so early is a true honour, and we can’t wait to bring you even more of what you love,” stated Tierney and Brady.
