The Doha-based airline, Qatar Airways, made headlines earlier this year after winning Skytrax’s World’s Best Airline for a record-breaking ninth time. Intrigued by this accolade, I embarked on my first flight with the Middle Eastern carrier in September, traveling from Sydney to Milan. My journey began in the economy class, often referred to as the “dreaded middle seat,” and concluded in the luxurious business class.
Economy Class: Comfort and Convenience
Initially, the thought of being seated between two people for 14 hours was daunting. However, my concerns were quickly alleviated. The unspoken rule that both armrests belong to the middle-seated person was respected, and the spacious seating provided unexpected comfort. The economy seat pitch ranges from 31 to 33 inches, with a width of 17.5 to 18.5 inches, depending on the aircraft type. The seats also offer a recline of up to 5 inches and adjustable headrests, which proved useful during naptime.
Qatar Airways’ extensive in-flight entertainment options contributed to a swift passage of time. The airline recently announced a partnership with Panasonic Avionics to launch a new entertainment system across its Boeing 777 9 fleet, promising to “completely redefine entertainment in the sky.” The onboard Wi-Fi, an add-on feature, impressed with speeds of up to 500 Mbps per aircraft, allowing passengers to stream, browse, and work efficiently.
“Long-haul flights are generally never fun; however, I was pleasantly surprised and quickly understood why Qatar Airways has so many accolades.”
Dining Above the Clouds
Renowned for its culinary offerings, Qatar Airways was named the winner of the 2026 APEX Best Global Food and Beverage Award. During the night flight, passengers were offered a choice between chicken, beef, or a vegetarian dish. I opted for the chicken curry, which was tender and flavorful, accompanied by fluffy rice and a refreshing salad. The experience was enhanced by the use of silver cutlery, a touch of business class luxury in economy.
The airline’s service was exemplary, with flight attendants responding promptly to requests. Qatar Airways has also been recognized for its wine list, winning gold at the Business Traveller’s Cellars in the Sky Awards, further cementing its reputation for excellence.
Business Class: A Luxurious Experience
My journey continued in business class for the remaining leg from Doha to Milan. The transition was seamless, with the airline’s lounges offering a “Transit Service” that includes escorting passengers to and from the aircraft. The Al Mourjan Lounge, awarded ‘World’s Leading Airline Lounge – Business Class,’ provided a luxurious respite with à la carte dining, a sushi bar, and quiet rooms for relaxation.
In business class, the spacious seat and elegant design created an “oasis of serenity.” The ample legroom and thoughtful storage solutions enhanced the experience. The cabin crew’s hospitality was impeccable, offering a welcome tea and a dining experience akin to a five-star restaurant. The butter-poached lobster and Qatari chicken mashkool were culinary highlights, served with precision and flair.
“Qatar Airways’ business class experience is truly next-level, with the Middle Eastern carrier really living up to its top-notch hospitality and service.”
The Lounge Experience
The Al Mourjan Lounge’s opulence is unmatched, featuring a Dior spa and direct access to La Maison Louis Vuitton. The lounge’s design and amenities provide a VIP experience, with options for à la carte dining and light snacks. Economy passengers can purchase access separately, allowing them to indulge in this luxury.
Implications and Future Prospects
Qatar Airways continues to see growth in both Economy and Business Class travel from Australia, with popular destinations including Italy, the UK, France, and Germany. The airline’s commitment to enhancing passenger experience through innovative entertainment systems and exceptional service sets a benchmark in the aviation industry.
As Qatar Airways expands its fleet and services, passengers can expect continued excellence in both economy and business class. The airline’s strategic partnerships and award-winning offerings position it as a leader in global air travel, promising an unparalleled journey for its passengers.
