The sad part was, we’d been there before. Motorsport fans from Down Under had lived through it in 2010 with Mark Webber — a three-way title fight in the Abu Dhabi finale that saw the Aussie’s teammate, Sebastian Vettel, claim his maiden championship. Fast forward to 2025, and the echoes of the past resonated once more as Lando Norris clinched the world title ahead of Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri.

With the season now in the rear-view mirror, it’s time to revisit Foxsports.com.au’s bold predictions for the 2025 F1 season. The results were both wild and haunting, leaving much to ponder for the upcoming 2026 season.

Piastri’s Near Miss and Norris’ Triumph

Prediction 1: Piastri Ends Aussie Drought, But Can’t Quite Win It All

Grade: Mostly correct

Oscar Piastri was tipped to claim Australia’s first podium finish at Albert Park. However, a spin on the wet track dashed those hopes, leaving him to finish ninth. Despite his impressive form throughout the season, Piastri ended just 13 points behind Norris, highlighting the fine margins in F1.

Our prediction that Piastri would not win the title was unfortunately accurate. His consistency was overshadowed by Norris, who finished outside the top four just four times. Piastri, despite showing improved qualifying performance, lacked the consistency required to secure the championship.

Prediction 2: Lando Wins His First Title

Grade: Sadly correct

The McLaren team provided Norris with the quickest car in 2025. Despite moments of inconsistency, Norris capitalized on his experience and team support to secure his maiden title. The perception of favoritism towards Norris was noted, yet his ability to consistently place himself in winning positions proved decisive.

“McLaren is clearly the best bet to be the fastest constructor at Albert Park,” we wrote, and Norris delivered, cementing his place in F1 history.

Driver Movements and Rookie Performances

Prediction 3: Money Talks, Costs Jack Doohan His Seat

Grade: Also sadly correct

Jack Doohan’s stint at Alpine was marred by the financial backing of reserve driver Franco Colapinto. Despite Doohan’s potential, the team’s decision to rotate drivers favored Colapinto, who eventually secured a spot for 2026. Doohan now sets his sights on Super Formula, with aspirations for a reserve role at Haas.

Prediction 4: The 18-Year Streak Ends and a Rookie Wins a Race

Grade: Not quite… but almost

Despite the dominance of McLaren and Verstappen’s brilliance, rookie Kimi Antonelli showed flashes of potential. His performance, particularly in the latter half of the season, showcased his talent, though a race victory eluded him. Antonelli’s journey reflects the challenges rookies face in adapting to the F1 circuit.

“Either way we’re sure the Italian will show flashes of brilliance in 2025,” we predicted, and Antonelli’s late-season surge validated this belief.

Williams’ Resurgence and the Midfield Battle

Prediction 5: Williams Gets Its First Proper Podium Since 2017

Grade: Ding ding ding

Williams’ resurgence was a highlight of the season, with the team securing not one, but two podium finishes. Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon formed a formidable partnership, leading Williams to a fifth-place finish in the constructors’ standings. Their success underscores the unpredictable nature of F1, where chaos can lead to unexpected triumphs.

“And then when it comes to a podium, they just need some chaos,” we noted. Williams capitalized on such opportunities, marking a significant step forward for the team.

The 2025 F1 season was a testament to the unpredictability and drama that defines the sport. As teams and drivers prepare for 2026, the lessons learned from this season will undoubtedly shape strategies and aspirations. With new talents emerging and seasoned drivers pushing for glory, the upcoming season promises to be just as thrilling.
