The City of Bayswater has welcomed a new addition to its community as Grind @ The Rise opens its doors in Maylands. This development fills a prime space that had been vacant for nearly five years, offering residents a new venue to enjoy coffee and healthy food options.

The cafe, which officially took on the lease this month, aims to revitalize the surrounding area. It offers a menu featuring smoothie bowls, wraps, baked goods, and juices, all made with locally sourced ingredients. The introduction of Grind @ The Rise is expected to not only enhance the local dining scene but also provide employment opportunities, including barista training for young people in the community.

The Selection Process and Community Impact

The decision to lease the space to Grind @ The Rise was made by the City of Bayswater councillors during a meeting in July. The Rockingham-based operator was chosen over two other applicants: Maylands’ Grow & Grind and Bayswater’s JBD Pty Ltd. The selection process highlighted the city’s commitment to attracting businesses that align with its vision for community engagement and development.

City of Bayswater Mayor Filomena Piffaretti expressed enthusiasm about the new tenant. “In occupying this space with a cafe, the city is meeting a growing demand to activate this important, well-used, and community-facing part of Maylands,” she said. The mayor emphasized the cafe’s connection to Ambrosia Catering, a renowned catering company, as a testament to the city’s appeal to high-caliber businesses.

Enhancing Community Spaces

The Rise, a community hub in Maylands, is already home to several not-for-profit groups. The addition of Grind @ The Rise complements existing facilities, including a health club, library, creche, and sports courts. Mayor Piffaretti noted, “Whether you’ve participated in a group fitness class, studied at the library, or hired a court for pickleball, there’s now the option to have a coffee afterwards or just take a break.”

Accessibility is a key feature of the new cafe, which is wheelchair-accessible, pram-friendly, and caters to all dietary requirements. This inclusivity makes it a suitable spot for casual meet-ups and community gatherings.

Addressing Local Concerns

The opening of the cafe comes amid some residents’ concerns about antisocial behavior in the area. Deputy Mayor Elli Petersen-Pik addressed these issues on social media, indicating that the city is considering further measures to ensure the safety and comfort of all visitors. Potential actions include locking public toilets for certain periods to deter undesirable activities.

“I’m pleased to see Grind @ The Rise now open for business, giving more to the locals who go to the Rise, and ultimately making our city an even greater place to live in,” Mayor Piffaretti stated.

Looking Ahead

The introduction of Grind @ The Rise marks a significant step in the ongoing development of Maylands. As the cafe settles into its new home, it is expected to become a vibrant part of the community, fostering connections and providing a welcoming space for residents and visitors alike. The city continues to explore ways to enhance the area, ensuring that Maylands remains a thriving and desirable place to live and work.
