In a surprising turn of events, Australian actor Jack Patten has stepped into the iconic role of Robin Hood in a new television series that promises to reimagine the legendary folk hero. The series, produced by MGM+ and airing on Stan in Australia, marks Patten’s major debut in Hollywood, a mere two years after graduating from the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA).

Patten, 28, who once aspired to be a professional Australian Football League (AFL) player, now finds himself at the forefront of a glossy 10-part TV series. This new adaptation of Robin Hood is a gritty, post-Game of Thrones historical drama that does not shy away from the darker aspects of the Middle Ages.

From AFL Dreams to Hollywood Screens

Raised in Western Sydney’s Hills District, Patten’s early dreams revolved around a career in AFL. However, a knee injury at the Sydney Swans Academy ended those ambitions prematurely. Reflecting on his past, Patten admits, “I loved footy. Loved watching it. Loved playing it. Ultimately though, I wasn’t good enough. Okay, I had injuries, but I just wasn’t there.”

It was a suggestion from a colleague that led Patten to acting classes, igniting a passion that would eventually lead him to NIDA. Despite his initial unfamiliarity with the acting world, Patten’s dedication and work ethic, honed through years of sports training, proved invaluable. “I love working in a team,” he says, drawing parallels between his sports and acting experiences.

A New Robin Hood for a New Era

The new series represents Hollywood’s first attempt at the Robin Hood legend since the 2018 film starring Taron Egerton. Patten’s portrayal of Robin Hood is grounded and relatable, depicting a young man rising up against Norman conquerors who have taken his community’s land and outlawed their religion. “It felt really human, despite it being quite genre,” Patten explains.

Joining Patten in the series are notable actors such as Sean Bean as the Sheriff of Nottingham, Connie Nielsen, and Steven Waddington, alongside a cast of newcomers. The production, filmed over eight months in Serbia, faced challenges such as freezing temperatures, yet maintained high energy thanks to its fresh talent.

The Journey to Robin Hood

Landing the role of Robin Hood was a significant milestone for Patten. “I was speechless,” he recalls. “And then I went over to Serbia in mid-January to get the bow and arrow under my belt and learn how to ride a horse.” This intensive preparation was reminiscent of his AFL training days, providing a sense of familiarity in his new career path.

Patten’s journey from aspiring AFL player to leading actor is a testament to his adaptability and determination. His early experiences in sports have translated well to acting, particularly in terms of discipline and teamwork. “I hadn’t had a game day in so long,” he reflects on his audition for NIDA. “So I was really prepared. I also didn’t have anything to lose.”

Looking Ahead

As Patten prepares for the premiere of Robin Hood, he remains focused on the future. With only a modest social media following, he is poised to reach a global audience with this series. His previous roles, including a guest spot on NCIS: Sydney and participation in local theatre, have built a solid foundation for his burgeoning career.

Looking forward, Patten is already contemplating the possibility of a second season. “If we get green lit for a second season, I’ll be practicing my horse riding and archery at home,” he says, embodying the proactive spirit that has guided his journey thus far.

Jack Patten’s transformation from a sports hopeful to Hollywood’s new Robin Hood is not just a personal triumph but also an inspiring narrative of resilience and reinvention. As audiences prepare to meet this new iteration of a timeless hero, Patten’s story serves as a reminder of the unexpected paths that can lead to success.
