Adelaide train-on talent Tom McGuane has expressed his determination to succeed in the AFL after being overlooked by Collingwood as a father-son prospect and subsequently passed over in the national and rookie drafts. The 18-year-old, son of 152-game Collingwood premiership player Mick McGuane, was left “blindsided” by the Magpies’ decision not to select him, despite being strongly linked to the midfielder throughout the year.

In a twist of fate, McGuane will now have the chance to prove himself with the Adelaide Crows, having been offered the opportunity to train with the team this summer. “I’m super grateful for the opportunity and can’t wait to get stuck in,” McGuane told reporters upon his arrival at Adelaide Airport on Tuesday.

Draft Disappointment and New Opportunities

The Magpies’ decision in October not to commit to McGuane, despite having priority access, was a significant setback for the young player. Mick McGuane revealed earlier this month that the news “hit like a tonne of bricks” for his son, who had also showcased his skills in three games for Collingwood’s VFL side this year.

However, McGuane’s resolve remains unshaken. “My ultimate goal is to play AFL footy, and I’ll do whatever it takes,” he declared, emphasizing his commitment to the sport. The Western Jets product is eager to make the most of his training stint with the Crows, hoping to secure a spot during the Supplemental Selection Period.

McGuane’s Performance and Aspirations

Despite the draft setback, McGuane’s performance in the Coates League this year speaks volumes about his potential. Averaging 27.9 disposals across 10 games, he demonstrated his ball-winning ability and a willingness to run both ways, although speed remains an area for improvement.

“I believe I’ll be good enough at that level, and I just bring it back to hard work,” McGuane stated, highlighting his determination to prove his worth in the AFL.

His father’s advice continues to motivate him. “My dad’s always told me the harder you work, the luckier you get,” McGuane shared, underscoring the work ethic instilled in him from a young age.

The Road Ahead with the Crows

McGuane’s journey with the Crows began unexpectedly, with the opportunity arising quickly. “It’s all moved so quickly, and I didn’t know it was coming until last night,” he explained, noting the whirlwind nature of the events leading to his training opportunity in Adelaide.

As he embarks on this new chapter, McGuane remains focused on his goal of reaching the AFL’s top level. “I’ve always had that chip on my shoulder to try and prove myself right and really train hard,” he said, expressing his determination to seize the opportunity with the Crows.

While the path to the AFL may be more challenging than anticipated, McGuane’s resilience and dedication are evident. As he prepares to train with the Crows, the young midfielder is poised to make the most of this chance to fulfill his AFL aspirations.
