livinia-nixon-bids-farewell-to-weather-role-after-two-decades

Nine Network’s beloved weather presenter, Livinia Nixon, is set to sign off from her long-held position at the end of this month, marking the end of an era after 20 years. The announcement was made on Friday afternoon, with Nixon expressing a mix of nostalgia and excitement about the new chapter ahead. “I’ve been on air for more of my life than I’ve not,” she remarked with a laugh. “I’m looking forward to a breather.”

Despite stepping down from her nightly weather briefings, the 50-year-old will remain a familiar face on Nine, continuing her roles on popular travel shows Getaway and Postcards. The decision to leave the weather segment was driven by a desire to spend more time with her family, especially as her youngest son, Ted, prepares to start high school, joining his older brother Henry.

Reflecting on a Storied Career

Nixon’s departure from the weather desk is not a decision she took lightly. She described the opportunity to be part of viewers’ nightly routines as a “privilege.” “Presenting the weather has shaped my life and career. I owe this role everything but this is the right decision for me,” she said. Her sons’ enthusiasm for her decision was a significant factor, with them expressing excitement about having more time with their mother.

Throughout her career, Nixon has had her share of memorable moments. One standout live broadcast involved a green tree python at Healesville Sanctuary. “The snake wrapped and squeezed, and then tried to slither in my jacket,” she recounted. “I’d never read the weather as quickly in my life.”

A Journey Through Television

Nixon’s journey with the Nine Network began in 1997, when she joined the cast of Hey Hey, It’s Saturday at just 22 years old, stepping into the shoes of Jo Beth Taylor on the iconic variety show. Her entry into television was unexpected, given her shy demeanor during her school years. However, a few childhood TV ads and a neighbor’s connection to casting agency Artist Services paved the way for her career.

She credits Australian entertainers Steve Vizard and Glenn Robbins, along with the Nine team, for their support throughout her career. Nixon’s versatility is evident in her diverse roles across shows like Temptation, Today, Weekend Today, Carols by Candlelight, Things to Try Before You Die, and Plucka’s Place.

Impact and Legacy

As Nixon prepares for her final weather broadcast on November 18, the search for her successor is underway. Hugh Nailon, Nine’s national news director, praised Nixon’s invaluable contribution to the Melbourne newsroom. “She has been a shining star on 9News for two decades, delivering Melbourne’s weather with warmth, expertise, and unmatched professionalism,” Nailon stated.

Her departure from the weather segment marks a significant transition for both Nixon and the Nine Network. However, her continued presence on Getaway and Postcards ensures that audiences will still enjoy her engaging storytelling and vibrant personality.

As Nixon steps back from the spotlight, her legacy as a trusted and beloved figure in Australian television remains firmly intact. Her decision to prioritize family underscores the personal sacrifices often made by those in the public eye, and her career serves as an inspiring example of dedication and adaptability in the ever-evolving media landscape.
