ACON is urging residents across New South Wales to “go red” this World AIDS Day by participating in the 2025 Red Ribbon Appeal. The initiative invites individuals and communities to host or support fundraisers aimed at ending HIV transmissions, challenging stigma, and supporting those living with HIV.

The Red Ribbon Appeal is ACON’s annual fundraising campaign, running throughout November and culminating on World AIDS Day, December 1. The funds raised are crucial for community programs that promote HIV prevention, testing, treatment, and care across NSW. These efforts also reinforce the community connections essential to combating HIV and supporting affected individuals.

A Community United Against HIV

From morning teas to trivia nights, bake sales, film screenings, and wearing red at work, there are myriad ways to engage with the Red Ribbon Appeal. The campaign unites workplaces, organizations, and communities around a shared mission: ending HIV transmissions, confronting HIV stigma, and supporting people living with HIV.

ACON CEO Michael Woodhouse emphasized the significance of the Red Ribbon Appeal as a symbol of community solidarity and commitment. “Every year, the Red Ribbon Appeal reminds us that community action drives progress. The funds raised help us reach more people with community programs that provide access to vital information and support,” Woodhouse stated.

“We have the tools to prevent new HIV transmissions, but we must make sure that everyone has access to them.” – Michael Woodhouse, ACON CEO

Progress and Challenges in HIV Prevention

While HIV notifications in NSW continue to decline, Woodhouse pointed out that not everyone benefits equally from this progress. “The theme of this year’s World AIDS Day is all about ensuring no one gets left behind. Your support for the Red Ribbon Appeal will help us ensure HIV prevention, testing, and treatment messages, programs, and services are reaching everyone in our communities,” he added.

World AIDS Day is an opportunity for education about HIV, reflection on the strides made in treatment and prevention, and a moment to honor those lost to AIDS-related illnesses. It also serves as a platform to show solidarity with people living with HIV.

“NSW has come a long way in reducing HIV transmissions, but we cannot stop now. World AIDS Day is a reminder about the importance of continuing the journey together, raising awareness, and ensuring that everyone living with HIV feels seen, supported, and respected.” – Michael Woodhouse

Resources and Involvement Opportunities

The Red Ribbon Appeal website offers a variety of resources to assist supporters in hosting events and fundraisers. Merchandise such as red ribbons and business packs are also available to bolster fundraising efforts.

“By getting involved, you’re helping to fund essential community-building programs, promote testing and prevention, and support people living with HIV,” Woodhouse noted. “Together, we can end HIV transmission in NSW and build a future free from stigma.”

World AIDS Day will be observed on Monday, December 1. ACON’s Red Ribbon Appeal continues throughout November. For more information and to participate, visit www.redribbonappeal.org.au.
