Sam Kerr is set for her much-anticipated return to the national team as head coach Joe Montemurro announced the 24-player Matildas squad for the upcoming October FIFA international window. Kerr will don the green and gold for the first time since November 2023, following an extended absence due to an ACL injury suffered in January 2024.
The October camp also marks the return of fan favorites Cortnee Vine and Katrina Gorry. Vine, a forward for North Carolina Courage and a World Cup hero, had made herself unavailable in November 2024 to focus on her mental health. Meanwhile, West Ham United midfielder Katrina Gorry rejoins the group after missing consecutive international windows due to injuries and personal leave.
Key Returns Bolster Matildas’ Preparations
The strong squad inclusions are expected to help the Matildas refine their combinations and build momentum ahead of next year’s home Asian Cup. The Matildas will play friendlies against Wales and England later this month, with the fixture against Wales being a historic first for the two teams.
These matches will be crucial as players vie for selection, with questions remaining over several World Cup stars still recovering from injury and younger players threatening established spots. Kerr, who has been easing back into action at club level with Chelsea, is expected to be gradually reintroduced to the national team setup.
“Having Sam back in the squad is a special moment – not just for the team, but for Australian football,” Montemurro said in a Football Australia statement. “Her leadership and presence are invaluable as we continue building toward the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 and beyond.”
Leadership and Strategic Goals
No official word has been given on whether Kerr will reclaim the captaincy from Steph Catley, as her off-field behavior during her injury lay-off had sparked debate. However, Football Australia has cleared any barriers, allowing Kerr to continue in the role if appointed by Montemurro.
Meanwhile, forward Mary Fowler continues her rehabilitation after rupturing her ACL during a women’s FA Cup semi-final in April. Return timelines for athletes who undergo ACL surgery can range from six months to over a year, but Montemurro remains hopeful Fowler could return to club action later this year. Midfielder Tameka Yallop also remains unavailable for national selection due to injury.
Montemurro outlined the team’s strategic goals for the October window, emphasizing preparation for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. “We are excited to bring this group together for two important fixtures in the October window where we have the opportunity to challenge ourselves, strengthen our cohesion, and continue to shape the way we play,” he said.
“The squad showcases the depth we are looking to build, by utilizing experienced players who continue to set high standards alongside the next generation,” Montemurro added.
Upcoming Fixtures and Expectations
The Matildas’ campaign begins on Saturday, October 25, when they take on Wales at Cardiff City Stadium. The team will then head across the border to face the Lionesses in Derby at Pride Park Stadium on Tuesday, October 28. This match against England is expected to be a stern test, given the competitive history between the two teams.
Montemurro emphasized the importance of these fixtures, stating, “It will be Australia’s first time competing against Wales, and there is a competitive history with England, so both games will provide different challenges to test the team, our playing style, and the way we play together.”
As the Matildas prepare for these crucial friendlies, the focus will be on building a cohesive unit that can perform at the highest level, with the ultimate goal of success in future international tournaments.
