Eleven groundbreaking research projects at Curtin University have been awarded over $6.2 million in funding under the Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project grants. This significant financial boost aims to tackle pressing challenges across diverse fields such as space science, critical minerals, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and digital culture.

The projects include a study on how Australian children engage with social media and aspire to become online influencers. Innovative Research Initiatives

Among the successful projects, researchers are developing a novel system to upcycle mixed waste plastics into jet fuel, a breakthrough that could significantly reduce landfill waste and support cleaner fuel production. Projects led by Professor Hongwei Wu and Dr. Yun Yu focus on coproducing biochar pellets and green chemicals via biomass pyrolysis, supporting cleaner energy and sustainable regional development. Meanwhile, Associate Professor Guohua Jia’s team is advancing high-entropy nanocrystals to enhance clean energy reactions, potentially leading to breakthroughs in sustainable energy production.

Efforts to improve infrastructure monitoring are also underway. Professor Jun Li and Dr. Zhen Peng are using drive-by sensing technology to efficiently monitor the health of city bridges, while also employing generative and physics-informed AI to enhance civil structure maintenance.

Space Exploration and Cultural Insights

In the realm of space exploration, Associate Professor Nicholas Timms and his colleagues are studying asteroid samples to reveal new clues about the formation of the Solar System. This research not only strengthens Australia’s role in global space research but also supports planetary defense initiatives.

On a cultural note, Dr. Vannessa Hearman and Professor Kit Messham-Muir are examining the influence of international funding and politics on contemporary art in Timor-Leste.
