Fortescue Metals Group has announced a significant milestone in its journey towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2030. According to CEO Dino Otranto, the company’s new electric haul trucks are now cost-competitive with their diesel counterparts. This development is expected to not only save money but also accelerate Fortescue’s decarbonization efforts.

The announcement coincided with the release of Fortescue’s quarterly production report on Thursday, which highlighted the company’s progress in reducing emissions. A key component of this strategy includes the integration of 10 electric excavators into their operations and the ongoing construction of the 190MW Cloudbreak solar farm in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, currently one-third complete.

Electric Trucks: A Complex Transition

The transition to zero-emission alternatives for the 240-tonne haul trucks, essential to Fortescue’s mining operations, has been a complex process. However, Otranto revealed on the Renew Economy’s Energy Insiders Podcast that Fortescue is set to receive its first electric trucks from suppliers Liebherr and XCMG in 2026.

“We reached important milestones this quarter, including the successful syndication of a Renminbi-denominated term loan and the establishment of new global partnerships that will help drive our profitable decarbonization,” Otranto stated.

Strategic Partnerships and Investments

Fortescue has recently signed technology partnership deals with several companies, including battery maker BYD, solar company Longi, wind manufacturer Envision Energy, and Liebherr. Additionally, Fortescue acquired the remaining shares of the Spanish wind technology provider Nabrawind, further strengthening its renewable energy capabilities.

In a Q&A session with analysts and investors, Otranto emphasized the importance of these partnerships in achieving the company’s $6.2 billion decarbonization budget. “We’re on track for that,” he assured. “But I think what’s important for the market to realize is, if you then look at the capital, let’s say per tonne of dirt moved … what we’re landing on is pretty exciting.”

“These are diesel equivalent options now,” Otranto added. “We’re not doing this because we don’t think our total cost of ownership is going to be less. Of course, we’re doing it because of that.”

Expanding Renewable Energy Infrastructure

Fortescue’s commitment to renewable energy is further evidenced by its recent unveiling of a new two-gigawatt wind project near its Pilbara mines. This project aims to decarbonize operations and supply clean power for electric trucks, excavators, and other mining equipment.

The wind farm will feature Envision turbines and Nabrawind’s “self-lifting” technology, primarily located on the Bonney Downs pastoral lease. However, some transmission infrastructure will require permission from rival billionaire Gina Rinehart, as it is set to cross the Roy Hill pastoral lease.

Implications for the Mining Industry

Fortescue’s advancements in electric vehicle technology and renewable energy infrastructure represent a significant shift in the mining industry. By reducing reliance on fossil fuels, the company not only cuts costs but also sets a precedent for sustainable mining practices.

As the industry faces increasing pressure to address climate change, Fortescue’s strategy could serve as a model for other mining companies worldwide. The company’s proactive approach in forming strategic partnerships and investing in clean energy highlights the potential for innovation in achieving environmental goals.

Looking forward, Fortescue’s efforts to reach “real zero” emissions by 2030 could have far-reaching implications, not only for the company but for the global mining sector. As more companies follow suit, the transition to sustainable practices may accelerate, contributing to a broader reduction in industrial emissions.
