Great Wall Motor’s (GWM) latest offering, the Tank 400 plug-in hybrid SUV, is set to begin pre-sales on October 21. This new model will be available in two variants: the existing Hi4-T and the newly introduced Hi4-Z. The official unveiling took place on September 22 in China, showcasing a refreshed design and several configuration upgrades.
The announcement comes as GWM aims to strengthen its position in the hybrid SUV market. The new Tank 400 maintains much of the design of its predecessor but introduces several notable changes. These include the addition of black decorative trim to the front bumper and an updated line layout. A new roof-mounted lidar, along with side and rearview cameras, supports GWM’s third-generation Coffee Pilot Ultra advanced driving assistance system, enabling urban and highway NOA (Navigate on Autopilot).
Design and Features
The exterior of the Tank 400 now offers a new “Dunhuang Purple” paint option, adding to its aesthetic appeal. The tail badges have also been updated, with the “GWM TANK” and “Great Wall Motors” logos positioned at the top, while the “Tank 400” and “Hi4-T / Hi4-Z” logos are at the bottom. In terms of dimensions, the new Tank 400 measures 4964/1970/1905 mm (length/width/height), with a wheelbase of 2850 mm. This makes it 21 mm shorter, 10 mm wider, and 5 mm taller than the current model, while the wheelbase remains unchanged.
Powertrain Options
The Tank 400 offers two powertrain options. The Hi4-Z variant shares its powertrain with the Tank 500 Hi4-Z, featuring a 2.0T engine paired with dual P2 and P4 electric motors. This setup delivers a fuel consumption rate of 8.3L/100km. The engine provides a maximum power of 185 kW (248 hp) and a peak torque of 380 Nm. The P2 and P4 motors offer maximum power outputs of 215 kW (288 hp) and 240 kW (322 hp), respectively. A 59.05 kWh ternary lithium battery pack supports a CLTC pure electric range of 200 km.
Meanwhile, the Hi4-T variant continues to utilize a plug-in hybrid system with the same 2.0T engine and an electric motor, achieving a fuel consumption of 8.4L/100km. The electric motor generates a maximum power of 120 kW (161 hp). Equipped with a 37.1 kWh ternary lithium battery pack, this variant offers a CLTC pure electric range of 105 km.
Interior and Technology
Inside, the Tank 400 mirrors the design of the current model, featuring a 12.3-inch full LCD instrument panel and a 15.6-inch floating central control screen. These are powered by GWM’s latest Coffee 3 operating system, ensuring a seamless user experience. Additional configurations include a mobile phone wireless charging panel, physical buttons on the center console for vehicle controls, a heads-up display (HUD), a digital rearview mirror, a 15.6-inch rear entertainment screen, and an onboard refrigerator. The audio system has been upgraded to include 14 speakers, up from 10, and the seats are upholstered in luxurious Nappa leather.
Market Implications and Future Prospects
The move represents GWM’s strategic push to capture a larger share of the hybrid SUV market, which has seen increasing demand due to environmental concerns and rising fuel prices. According to industry analysts, the introduction of the Hi4-Z variant could appeal to consumers seeking higher performance and longer electric range options.
As GWM continues to innovate and expand its lineup, the Tank 400’s launch is a significant step in its broader strategy to enhance its global presence. The company’s focus on advanced driving assistance systems and cutting-edge technology positions it well in the competitive automotive landscape.
Looking ahead, the success of the Tank 400 could pave the way for further developments in GWM’s hybrid and electric vehicle offerings. As the automotive industry shifts towards sustainability, GWM’s commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction will be crucial in maintaining its competitive edge.
