Sunshine Coast Airport has unveiled an ambitious $170 million terminal redevelopment plan, marking a significant milestone in its expansion efforts. The project, which aims to nearly double the terminal’s size, will increase the number of departure gates from five to seven and triple the footprint of the departure lounge.
Construction company McNab has been appointed as the builder, while global architectural firm Populous | Fentress Studios is responsible for the terminal’s design. Planned Performance will manage the project. The redevelopment is designed to meet future demand, enhance efficiency, and improve the travel experience for both locals and visitors.
Sunshine Coast Airport CEO Chris Mills emphasized the airport’s commitment to delivering world-class outcomes for the region. “The Terminal Redevelopment Project is a major milestone in the airport’s expansion with approximately $170 million being invested to support the future of our airport and our region,” he stated.
Community-Centric Design and Economic Impact
The redevelopment is expected to support local jobs, boost the economy, and reinforce the Sunshine Coast’s role as a key tourism and business gateway. Mr. Mills highlighted the importance of community input in shaping the project, ensuring that the terminal reflects local needs and expectations.
“From the look and feel of the terminal to how we welcome and serve travellers, locals helped shape more than just a space, they helped shape a better journey for everyone,” Mills added. The project will feature expanded retail and food offerings, the latest technology for check-in and security, and sustainable design elements.
Sunshine Coast Airport chair David Ryan expressed his excitement about the project, noting the appointment of McNab as a builder with a strong reputation. “McNab’s proven track record of delivering high-quality projects in our region gives us great confidence,” he said.
Innovative Design and Sustainability
Populous | Fentress Studios Asia Pacific Head of Aviation, Matt Findlay, shared insights into the terminal’s design, which aims to reflect the unique character of the Sunshine Coast while offering a seamless passenger experience. “Our vision for the terminal is to create a space that celebrates the Sunshine Coast’s natural beauty and lifestyle while providing travellers with a modern, efficient, and welcoming gateway,” he explained.
The design will prioritize natural light and offer sweeping views of the runway, allowing passengers to enjoy the excitement of aircraft arrivals and departures from the comfort of the terminal. “By seamlessly integrating security and check-in, enhancing the arrival experience, and reducing the distance between check-in and boarding gates, we’re reimagining the terminal journey to be more intuitive, efficient, and welcoming for every passenger,” Findlay added.
Sustainability and accessibility remain at the heart of every design decision, alongside greater passenger seating and amenities.
Phased Development and Future Growth
The Terminal Redevelopment Project will be delivered in stages to minimize disruption to passengers and ensure continuity of operations. The first stage is already underway, with the new outbound checked baggage handling facility scheduled for completion in early 2026 and the full domestic terminal expansion expected by 2027.
By 2030, Sunshine Coast Airport is forecast to welcome 2.4 million passengers annually. The terminal’s footprint will almost double, expanding from 6,100 square meters to 11,750 square meters. The domestic departure lounge will increase threefold, from 1,250 square meters to 3,750 square meters, and departure gates will see a 40% boost in capacity.
New check-in technology will include 18 self-service kiosks and 10 automatic bag drops. Sustainability features will incorporate mass timber, rainwater harvesting, expanded solar panels, energy-efficient HVAC systems, and a climate-sensitive design.
Strategic Importance and Economic Contributions
Sunshine Coast Airport is one of Australia’s fastest-growing airports, with connections to major cities such as Adelaide, Auckland, Cairns, Melbourne, and Sydney. Supported by airlines including Air New Zealand, Alliance, Jetstar, Qantas, and Virgin Australia, the airport offers more than 80 flights per week to Sydney and Melbourne.
The airport was declared a Priority Development Area (PDA) in 2023. By 2040, it is estimated that the airport will directly contribute $460 million to Australia’s GDP, potentially supporting over 2,000 jobs.
Sunshine Coast Airport Pty Ltd operates and manages the airport under a 99-year lease from Sunshine Coast Council, which commenced in 2017. This redevelopment represents a strategic investment in the region’s future, enhancing its position as a vital gateway for tourism and business.
